Tax tip – GST credit payment doubles over six months starting November 4

The first of the government of from Canada new financial support measures came into effect this Friday, November 4, 2022 with the additional one-time payment of the goods and services tax credit (GST credit).

This additional one-time payment will double the GST credit for six months for those who receive it, to make life more affordable.

Recipients of the GST credit do not need to claim the additional payment. It will be sent automatically by direct deposit or mailed to eligible persons. The amount of the payment is calculated according to the family situation of the person in question. October 2022 and on their 2021 income tax and benefit return.

Eligible families and individuals could receive a one-time payment for up to:

  • $234 for a single person
  • $306 for married or common-law partners
  • $387 for a single parent with one child
  • $467 for a couple with two children

Individuals who currently receive their GST credit payment as a lump sum payment will still receive the additional payment, but may not receive it in November. Their next payment will be January 5, 2023 and will take into account the additional one-time GST credit payment.

Warning: beware of scams! Under no circumstances will the CRA use text messages or instant messengers like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp to start a conversation with you about this credit, your taxes, your benefits, or My Account. Do not reply to a suspicious text message or share any personal information.

Individuals are encouraged to file their 2021 tax return today, if they have not already done so, in order to receive the credits and benefits to which they are entitled.
