HotSpot — the same app that Stratford drivers can use to pay for parking — will include an additional option to pay transit fares starting July 18, city officials announced Friday.

“Electronic payment for any service has become commonplace globally for all types of purchases and Stratford Transit will now offer customers the option to purchase fares in the same way,” said Michael Mousley , director of public transit for the city. “Electronic fares through the app are secure, environmentally friendly, cost-effective and of great value to our customers who want to use it.”

A variety of transit passes will be available for purchase through the app, which offers users a secure digital wallet funded by their credit card. The HotSpot app will also offer attendance history, real-time tracking, alerts and trip planning, in addition to being paperless and contactless, according to a press release.

However, a small “convenience fee” is added to each transaction.

Here’s how bus fares will change for users who choose to pay with HotSpot:

Available for purchase from July 18

  • Single ride (adult, senior, student, affordable) – plus $0.20 convenience fee per ride
  • Day pass – plus $0.50 convenience fee per pass
  • Family pass – plus $0.75 convenience fee per pass

Available for purchase from August 1

  • Monthly pass – plus $2 convenience fee per pass. Monthly passes through HotSpot are not 30-day passes, but rather cover a calendar month only.

Stratford Transit offers different base fares depending on the age of the passenger. More information is available on the city’s website.

Paper passes will still be available for purchase and cash will continue to be accepted.
