New York 2022 stimulus payment: $270 checks are in the mail
STATEN ISLAND, NY – Have you checked your mail yet today? There may be a check for $270 from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF) for you.
The agency announced Wednesday that it has begun sending additional financial assistance, totaling $475 million, to 1.8 million eligible New Yorkers.
“We’re handing out these relief checks to hard-working New Yorkers feeling the pinch of inflation,” DTF Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller said. “The average payout is approximately $270 for each beneficiary, which will help with rising costs associated with the pandemic and inflation.”
Checks are automatically mailed to people who received Empire State Child Credit and/or Earned Income Credit on their 2021 tax returns.
To be eligible, you must have filed your New York State income tax return (Form IT-201) by April 18, 2022 or had a valid time extension to file it.
DTF expects most checks to reach taxpayers by October 31, 2022.
The agency could not provide a specific delivery schedule, but noted that some people may receive their checks after October if the department is still processing their return. Checks will be automatically issued once returns are processed.
New Yorkers who have recently moved should update their address with DTF to avoid delays in receiving their NYS Income Tax and Child Income Supplementary Payment check. To do so, they can create an account on the ministry’s website and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the required fields and save their updated address.
