STATEN ISLAND, NY — Governor Kathy Hochul and legislative leaders announced Thursday that a stimulus payment of about $270 will be sent to 1.75 million New Yorkers to fight inflation and improve affordability.

The New York Department of Tax and Finance will soon begin sending direct financial assistance to New Yorkers who received Empire State Child Credit and/or Earned Income Credit on their 2021 tax returns. New Yorkers can expect to receive their checks by the end of October.

“With this relief program, we are delivering on our commitment to help hard-working New Yorkers through the national affordability crisis,” Hochul said. “This program will put money back in the pockets of nearly two million New York families struggling to make ends meet in the face of the pandemic, inflation and other rising costs. My administration remains focused on improving financial accessibility across the state, and I thank the Legislature for its partnership in ensuring New York families get this much-needed financial help.

Hochul and members of the state legislature approved the additional child income tax payment and NYS revenue as part of the enacted budget for fiscal year 2023. The program will provide an average payment of $270 $ per eligible beneficiary. Eligible New Yorkers do not need to do anything to receive their checks; checks will be mailed automatically.

Earlier this year, the governor accelerated the distribution of $2.2 billion in tax relief to more than two million New Yorkers through the new homeowners tax credit. Governor Hochul also announced a statewide gasoline and diesel tax holiday to provide relief to New Yorkers at the pumps as fuel prices hit record highs.

New Yorkers who have recently moved should update their address with the Department of Tax and Finance to avoid any delays in receiving their checks for payment of child income tax and earned income . To do this, they can create an account on the Department’s website website and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the required fields and save their updated address.
