Manage payment methods in your Google Account

Buying things and paying for subscriptions online has been completely normalized and is one of the easiest ways to do it. Google allows you to add and retain debit and credit card information stored in your Google Account, so you have this information wherever you go. An important aspect of this is being able to manage payment methods in your Google account, whether adding or removing them. Here’s how.

Benefits of adding debit and credit cards to your Google Account

As mentioned, making payments online is just a normal part of life. Unlike adding your payment methods to any site, adding one to your Google Account has a few additional benefits. For example, the payment methods you add to your account follow you in most Google apps, which means you can purchase subscriptions and enable payment autofill in Google Chrome as well as some apps.

Using Google Pay adds a measure of security. Some cards used online may be assigned a virtual number which is more difficult to trace back to your actual card information. Additionally, cards added to your Google Account can be easily added to GPay on Android to facilitate in-store contactless payments. In general, adding payment information to your Google Account can make online shopping and digital payments easier, which is rarely a bad thing.

To be clear, this guide does not go into great detail about adding and removing payment methods on GPay, as the app focuses on contactless payments. Think of your Google Account payment methods as the parent of GPay payment methods. The payment methods added to your Google Account serve several different purposes.

How to add payment methods to your Google Account

There are several ways to add payment information to your Google Account. You can either do this on a desktop computer with Google Chrome or use your mobile device with the Google app for Android. To add payment methods to your Google Account, follow these steps:

On Chrome for Desktop

  1. On your computer, open Google Chrome.
  2. In the upper right corner of the Google search pageclick on your profile picture.
  3. Click on Manage your Google account.
  4. At the top, click Payments & subscriptions.
  5. In the first box, press Manage payment methods.
  6. Click on Add a payment method and choose between bank account or debit/credit card.
  7. Enter the necessary information for either.
  8. Follow the steps to authorize this payment method.

On Android

  1. On your Android device, open the Google app.
  2. In the app, tap your profile picture.
  3. Faucet Manage your Google account.
  4. Scroll through the sections and find Payments & subscriptions.
  5. Faucet Add a payment method.
  6. Choose an existing map or tap the plus icon with the text that leads credit or debit card.
  7. Scan the card with your camera or choose to enter details manually.
  8. Enter the necessary information for either.
  9. Follow the steps to authorize this payment method.

Whichever way you decide to add a payment method, some steps may be specific to the bank linked to your card. Generally, the last steps are easy to do and shouldn’t take a lot of time. Banks sometimes take a little time to authorize a credit or debit card, but no more than a few minutes.

Remove payment methods from your Google Account

Whether on desktop or mobile, removing payment methods can be even easier than adding them. You may need to do this if a card expires, if you lose one and have replaced it, or if you no longer use the institution.

If any of these events occur, you can follow these steps to remove a payment method from your Google Account:

  1. In the Payments & subscriptions page in the Google app or on Google’s online payment center, find the card you want to delete.
  2. On the desktop, click Remove under payment method. On Android, tap the map, then tap the three dot menu top, followed by Delete payment method.
  3. Confirm deletion.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to add those cards again if you want to use them through Chrome or GPay, and maybe even Google Wallet in the future. The deletion process is never final unless the card has been deactivated by your bank.

Payment activity management

Finally, there is an additional page that may be useful for those who have active subscriptions with their Google account. This page is the Activity section of your Google account. Here you can check when the charges were created and their amount.

This page will show you Google subscriptions as well as payments made through Play Services. For example, in-app purchases will appear here. This makes it easy to track your expenses in the app.

Overall, being able to manage your payment methods is good practice as cards and bank accounts come and go. Keeping your Google account up-to-date is not only safer, but also makes it easier to pay online or through GPay, since there’s less to scroll through at the end.
