IDES Removes Debit Cards As Method Of Payment, Warns Applicants To Switch To Direct Deposit

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced Monday that the agency is phasing out debit cards as a method of paying for unemployment insurance benefits.

The change comes after KeyBank made the decision to stop providing debit cards for UI benefits.

While applicants still have access to the remaining funds on their KeyBank debit card, no further payments will be made to these cards as of December 27.

KeyBank debit cards will continue to function normally until the card expires.

Applicants who are currently receiving debit card benefits are strongly encouraged to switch to direct deposit.

IDES will provide more information directly to applicants via email on the impact of this change on their benefit payments, detailed instructions on how to switch to direct deposit, and will work with stakeholders to provide information and resources to applicants. people who currently do not have access to a direct deposit option. .
