Some Britons will not receive their £150 council tax refund as scheduled in April. A council is reported to have informed thousands of residents that a “software glitch” is delaying payments.
In February, Rishi Sunak announced that people living in municipal tax brackets A to D in England will receive a non-refundable £150 maintenance allowance to help them cope with rising bills. But that now seems unlikely to some people.
According to moneysavingexpert.com, a MoneySaver forwarded a letter he received from his council – South Derbyshire. The letter, which was sent to 39,000 people, said payments would not be made until “at least June” due to “software” issues.

A spokesperson for South Derbyshire Council told moneysavingexpert.com: “This software will require extensive testing before it can be used. If all goes well with testing, residents can expect to receive their £150 rebate late May or early June.
It has also been reported that Portsmouth City Council has informed residents they will not receive their payment until September. Their website says direct debit users will start getting the refund at the end of April, while it will reach out to those who don’t pay by direct debit in May and June.
When is the official deadline for the discount?
According to the Department of Leveling, Housing and Communities, councils are responsible for choosing how they manage their complaints process. This includes the software provider they use.
He told moneysavingexpert.com: ‘The exact timing of payments will vary from council to council, but many are aiming to pay eligible households in April, where they already hold their bank details.
Councils have been told payments are expected to be made by September 30, 2022. However, it was hoped the majority would receive the money this month.
Set up direct debit to avoid delays
While there’s not much you can do to expedite payment, you can set up a direct debit with your council to ensure you receive the refund as quickly as possible. To do this, go to your municipality’s website.
By setting up a direct debit, you will not have to wait for your town hall to invite you to make a complaint. They will have your bank details to make the payment automatically. You can end direct debit once you have received payment if you wish.
