Americans could be in line with a monthly direct payment of $250 under the new plan – who would be eligible

HUNDREDS of low-income families could receive $250 a month for a year under a new proposal.

The Dallas City Council approved the transfer of at least $20 million to help fund the program.

The funds come from excess sales tax revenue and are earmarked for racial justice efforts, Local Today reports.

This includes $1 million for the pilot program which would give monthly payments to 325 families.

The advocacy group Mayors for Guaranteed Income reported that at least 30 other cities have similar programs in place.

The mayors of Austin, San Antonio and Houston are all part of the group.

All three cities have already implemented their own annual income programs.

There are 85 households in Austin receiving $1,000 per month and 110 in Houston receiving $375 per month.

San Antonio launched a pilot project in 2020 that would give 1,000 low-income families $400 every three months over a two-year period.

Several details still need to be discussed and finalized before the program can move forward, including eligibility requirements.

At present, all that has been said is that the money will go to families “living in historically underserved areas”.

Similar programs across the country

Several states offer their residents recurring payments through different programs.

In Virginia, the Alexandria Guaranteed Income Pilot is offering 150 participants $500 a month for two years through 2023.

Struggling families in Phoenix, Arizona are given $1,000 debit cards for a year.

To qualify, the income of a family of four cannot exceed 80% of the region’s median income of $63,200.

In Chelsea, Massachusetts, 2,000 eligible residents receive a monthly allowance ranging from $200 to $400 per month.

No conditions are attached. People can use the money as they see fit.
