I looked over that install guide & I must say it is done very well. My concern is that I believe there are bolts that require a low inch pound tourque spec, and the one I have really doesn't go low enough.

I looked when I changed the oil, but boy does it look tight in there.

$120 to install makes me want to bite the bullet and try it myself.

GR8FLPT took 6 hours.

Is your time worth it?
Is making a costly mistake worth it?
Remember to add the cost of a quality in/lb torque wrench to your total investment.

When you pay for labor, you are really paying for tools, equipment, training, experience, warranty, time, and trust.

If anyone thinks a mechanic gets to keep all the money charged for labor......
Let's talk about the $10K in test eqipment, the $20K in tools, the college years and training, shop overhead, repair information system ($175/month), etc...
Let's not forget liability and garagekeepers insurance.

That $120 will more than pay for a good inch-pound torque wrench. Then you'll have a new tool that's yours to keep and the satisfaction of doing the work yourself.

your right as far as the labor goes. The mechanic should be paid. I just had a deal going with a friends brother who had the shop keys that day.
We broke a nut off the upper heatshield because we (they) refused to read the guide. READ IT 1st! Then again then 1 more time as you go. It is not hard if you let things cool down 1st & follow directions.

BTW, we ended up welding the nut back on & were still able to use BOTH stock heat shields. So far 6 months its been in. NO PROBLEMS!!!

We are now going to install BOB's GT INTAKE mod on MNSHALES car. will keep you posted...

Later.

Oh you make very good points MX-5, and yes running any business is costly for certain, never meant to imply otherwise. The costly mistake part is the concern....... Going to have to think this over, not in a huge hurry anyway.
