Default another spark plug question re double platinum

OK ... just got back from the dealer for an oil change (does them for free) ...I asked him how much to install double plat plugs (I supplied them) and he said about $75 (ridiculous), BUT he said he does not recommend them, that they (the dealership) has had all sorts of problems with them ... I asked what kind of problems and he wouldn't elaborate ....

Have any of you had any problems or is he just blowin' smoke?

Smoke.
Unless someone put in plugs not meant for the engine.

Why is $75 for plug installation "rediculous"?

Unless you own a GT turbo, the entire upper intake manifold MUST be removed to access the spark plugs.

Book rate in the labor guide is over 2 hours labor.

Look at the guide at www.ptdiy.net and you will see the photos and procedure.

I change a lot of PT plugs and get a flat $50 for the job.
My labor rate is $47.62/hour for mechanical services.

That $75 seems cheap to me. My dealer quoted $100 and then insisted that the manifold gaskets would HAVE to be replaced as part of the plug installation. That provided the incentive to me to buy the proper torque wrench and do the job myself, using the PT-DIY directions.

It took me, a relative mechanical newbie, about 2 hours to do the job. That made me angry... the "pros" at my shop figured the same amount of time that I used while fumbling with instructions and running back and forth to the house looking for that right-size diameter of rubber hose (to lower the plug into place).

Default Job Done! (with a torque wrnech!)

Hey all and thanks --- I did buy an inch-pounds torque wrench ... It did make a difference in how the job went ... with no guessing about tightening, the job went pretty fast with only one problem.

Getting the EGR bolts and the throttle body bolt on was a little rough. It seems that when the manifold went back on, the other stuff was no longer in perfect alignment ... a little "Persuasion" did help that. I did NOT replace the manifold gaskets (O-rings), obly because the PT-DIY instructions didn't say to do so. The whole job took only about an hour, primarily because for once, I was organized ... had all of the tools, grease, plugs etc all laid out on a table.

Other than that ... I'm very satisfied with the results! It seems like the Cruiser is idling MUCH smoother and has a bit more power (but that could just be in my head)!

See Ping....

I told you it was easy.

You are now qualified to change them for other PT owners.
You can make back enough cash to cover the torque wrench.

The rubber O-rings are re-useable.
The service manual states that. Any dealer insisting on replacement is not experienced enough to be trusted.

You hit the nail on the head with that remark...Laurel Chrysler/ Jeep in Johnstown... great sales staff and a service department that should be proud that they manage to get dressed for work every day...
