Default to torque or not to torque

I have a new set of the Champion double platinum plugs that I want to put into my 2002. Question is ... do I really need to toruqe these to 13 ft/lbs??? That means I need to go out and buy another torque wrnech ,,,, now I've installed plugs in aluminum head engines before (Geo Prizm, Hondas) and all I;ve done is to snug them down (yeah its very innacurate), but I've neved stripped the threads in the head. Truthfully, do all of you out there use a torque wrench??? I don;t really believe that my Chrysler dealership bothers. What do you think?

When I installed mine I was impressed with how little torque 13 ft/lbs is when you go by feel. After you apply anti-sieze, it takes a finely tuned arm to gauge the proper torque without going over.
Buy the wrench. It's still cheaper than the labor my dealership wanted to charge me for the plug installation, not to mention the triple price premium for the double-platinum plugs they tried to push. Look at it this way, you get to own another cool tool. If you buy a good one, it should last for quite awhile.

I can only speak for myself. I use a torque wrench whenever there are torque specs. 13 ft-lbs isn't a lot and it is easy to over-tighten and stretch the threads. Snugging down a spark plug, bolt, or nut can easily exceed 25 ft-lbs. YMMV

I've changed plugs on several PTE members cars.....

They will all attest that I used an inch/lb torque wrench on every plug.

Follow the www.ptdiy.net guide.

Just did this last night. If I had tighted by hand, I would have definitely overdone it. 17Nm doesn't even seem tight enough to not fall out.

Okay, I'll admit it - I'm like you, I've put plugs into cars with aluminum heads before, and I didn't use a torque wrench.
My tip - check the gap - the new Champion platinums I bought were all off - some under, some over 0.050".
