Default Deep breathing mods. questions.

In the past I have thought/fantasized about doing everything from an all out turbo setup, supercharging, NOS, etc. Now I am thinking about a basic little NA setup.

I am not expecting to put up huge numbers and whoop up on Corvettes or anything. I just want to add a little sportiness.

I have broken up my plan into stages for income reasons.

Here is my plan. (By the way I have '01 LE, auto)

Stage 1: Crane Cams -10 grind, Crane Cams gears (necessary?), tensioner upgrade (I am having a hard time finding a supplier for Cams. I know Race and Street used to have them, but they are not there anymore. Any ideas?)

Stage 2: a.MX-5 cold-air intake
b.bored throttle body, GT intake

Stage 3: JBA headers, and I already have Borla 2.5" duals

Stage 4+: Maybe a little porting and head work, and possibly rods and pistons. Bigger injectors

That's it. Let me know if anything needs to be moved around for logistical reasons or if anything needs to be replaced with something better. I am no expert at this stuff, just trying to put together what I've been reading about 'round here.

I figure that if I do want to go turbo later I will still be able to utilize everything but the headers.

Thanks in advance.

You need BStockum or MX-5 to comment. I hope your state doesn't do emissions testing, because I don't think you'd pass.

For all you're talking about doing and spending, you can put NOS on for less than half and increase your H.P. by 75.

That list looks right.

NOs is cheap and fun, ... as long as you don't mind going back to the filling station more often than you ever imagined. Power is like a drug, ... you just keep wanting more! The NOs belongs on the track, the way I see it. I would rather have the extra power all the time and not have to worry about the bottle. More and more states are dissaproving of having the bottle hooked up in your car!

Just my opinion, .... Any way, ... I'd rather be blown. (turbo, forced induction, ... like that you see )

Check out the this thread:

Another Bob S. GT intake installed

It shows basics of what we did with Bob S's help. Cams is next to go in.

Be careful that the person who installs the Crane Cams knows whet they are doing and knows about the need for other engine pieces to go with the cams, such as the tensioner. Do a search for Crane Cams here and read the threads carefully. It does seem that R&S has dropped the Crane cams and it may be--I'm only guessing--that they did it because of problems with some Crane cam installs.

Default cams

I have Crane -10 cams and they really wake the car up. I also did crane gears and Stockum tensioner. Bob got everything for me at great prices. Have u ever thought of doing just a Hahn turbo and running it a factory settings of 6-7 lbs. of boost. I feel this would probably be quicker and more responsive than all of the above combined and also cheaper.

Hahn kit 2500.00 all bolt on nothing else needed u would save almost 500.00 by not ever having to buy the header and install. Kit even comes with its own KN intake system.Saves another 150.00. Go to the Stockum web site and watch the video of the Hahn car auto run a new GT auto the video speaks for itself. that car did have a used 100,00 Ford Probe intercooler on it also but I think that was it. Will u be happy with the upgrade I think u would have smiles from ear to ear! All the other upgrades might give u 30 hp verses somewhere around 75hp from the turbo kit. If u can do the install yourself minus what the header and intake would cost , it would cost u 1850.00 or there about. U should be able to get it installed for about 1000.00 if u cant do it yourself. This I feel would give u the best base to build on. Note do not install a boost control that way u wont feel the need to play. Visit www.bstockum.com.

Default add a few more words

Talk with Taikuchin and Oc Cruizer they both had the benifit of running stock Hahn systems and building up . I had Bob do everything a once . I also feel if u dont do the turbo and go the other way you should also do underdrive pulleys.just a thought.

I'm still running the basic stage 1 Hahn setup (4-5# boost) without the intercooler. The car is stock except for a glasspack muffler & dual pipes. It does everything I want to do (for the time being) with the option of being able to upgrade to go as fast as I want to (until the $$ runs out). 11000 miles of trouble free turbo driving pleasure and although she's not the fastest PT around, she's a hell of a lot faster than all the stock ones running around, including the fart can rice burners. Love it!!
