Good idea Dan.

Maybe the next step should be to combine it with MX-5's intake location. Punch another hole in the lower airbox housing and run an insulated intake tube to the front beside the rad to draw in unlimited cold air. That would allow a positive air charge in the filter housing rather than the vacum induced draw in the current design.

Interesting point. Under hood would be vaccuum draw, up front like MX-5 would be ram air. Now you got me thinking again

The concept seems good but it makes it a bit awkward to access the filter and near impossible to plumb to the stock airbox.

I had no trouble , it works for me
Beets sucking all that hot air with them after market air intakes that look good when you have the hood open !

No offence intended.

I was comparing your layout to the prospect of drawing air from beside the rad(cold air) into the stock airbox. This would allow positive air pressure at the intake and still allow for a quick and easy filter element change. In your setup it's a little more time consuming to change or clean the air filter because the driver's side wiper arm and cowling have to be removed each time.

The advantage yours has is that it isn't exposed to any direct water in wet weather so that is definitely not a problem. With ram air introduced to the stock air box I would hope the water would still drop to the bottom of the box as intended in the stock setup so that may not be a significant issue.

Lets see how it performs before I try any other modifications to the intake. I considered the cowl induction that MX-5 has on his website, but I believe the strut brace may be in the way.

To change the filter just flip the 2 snaps losen the hose lift the top of the filter box do your thing & your done. There is no filtr in the cowel, only the stock filter in the box This hole set up can be changed back to stock in 1 min. That`s in clouding the plate to cover the hole in the fire wall.
