I just found a cool air modification at ptdoityourself.net and am wondering if anyone knows whether or not this modification will help in any way?
http://www.ptdoityourself.net/ptcoolairintakeguide.html It looks fairly straightforward, but ??? Thanks. |

That's Iilipt(sp).
He designed that a while back and I was asked my opinion prior to the online guide. Maybe I'll take some temperature readings to see what happens in there. My temp probe has a recording feature with averages and min/max readings. I can't answer about water intrusion. I've never driven mine in a rainstorm. I do not know if water gets in there or not. You'll have to ask a daily driven PT owner to look. BTW, my horn is mounted in the center grille.

I did notice that on my PT, (where the modification on PTDIY.net was located) the cowl is solid - the only air intake area is on the other side where the cabin air filter is located, so I'm not sure if this would be effective, but MX-5 - you're the pro, so I suppose you would know. For the time being, I think I'm going to stick with a CARB approved open air intake and not mess with the firewall.
Thanks everyone! |

I saw that too. I really got to get a camera to show you all what I did. The 3" opening on the stock box is real easy to do if you are somewhat handy. Parts ran about $8 from menards. It took about 1 1/2 hrs to install. Can be done with a drill, files, epoxy, hacksaw, & sandpaper.
Using a K&N drop in you should get close to if not better than the FIPK for much less... oh yea did I mention no sound either ![]()

Don't worry about a little water. It won't hurt you unless it's over your head. Those big rigs on the hyway use water injected systems. It gives them more hp and better mileage. My hood is louvered and I drive it in the rain ,run thorugh water puddles and it just keeps on ticking. I use the air force air filter.

I`ve driven in rain storms in St Louis With no water getting in the tube.As of this date the mod has been up dated to increase the air flow & has proven to work with air temp at the T/B at ambient temp. |

Four forty bucks it pays to run a bypass if u are worried about water. if your filter is in engine compt I wouldnt worry ,if filter is down near fog lights I would run bypass. I have a friend that lost his engine to hydrolock from sucking water it doesnt take much water to do it either.
