Just remove the original air filter and replace it with the K&N filter.
And welcome to PTE

so thats it?!? i did a dry run (filter should be coming in in 3-4 days from monday) right after i posted the question and could not believe how easy it was to take that box off and btw i popped off that snorkel thing....it looks like it would restrict the flow even more...is it okay to drive without that thing (was is it? a silencer?)...thanks for the welcome glenn ive actually been hanging around for about a year...ive done the mx5 wire snip thing and small stuff like a kuztom kruzer-skull shift knob, skull door locks and those shiny chrome ac knobs from revelant....hope to add some chrome side spears in the near future.

Default Cooler air

Hey Don, The Rat here. That snorkel thingy is where you get cooler air for the air box .There is a hole in the fender that feeds cooler air into the snorkel put it back. Also if you are worried about air restriction try a cold air box like Airaid Intakes. It replaces your present box and seals to the hood plus it sounds cool Vrooom and your little 2.4 will love ya. Oh always remember these are Cruiser's not Ricer's. Have fun and never be too cool not to ask any questions .

Default snorkel thingamabob

hola raton,
not sure we're talking about the same snorkel, this ones IN the top of the airbox. about two inches tall about the same across. flared trumpet end on one side and flat end with a notch cut out on the other. white pvc looking thing came off with a flick of the wrist. wasn't connected to anything. really want to get an airaid but my budgets kinda tight. who knows xmas is only five months away. lol.
thanks,

Default this thingy

found this on ptdiy.net:

692. I have a 2002 base edition PT and noticed something in the top section of the OEM airbox while servicing my K&N after market filter. It appears to be a white plastic reducer (restriction) lodged in the air passageway nozzle. It looked like it reduced the airflow by about 10%, so I removed it. What a difference - it sounds better, and there's a tad more throttle response now that more air is able to enter the engine. I can't believe I missed that thing when I put in the K&N the first time. Why does DC have this reducer installed in the inlet - for noise? Thanks. - Dan, from Florida.

I tested it about 2 years ago; the restriction is nearly 33%. It's part of the silencer. Now you know why some of the after market and alternate homemade air intakes are popular.

Cool, so methinks it okay to drive around without it. doesnt seem to make much diff but its a little louder (which i like), cant wait to get my drop in. yup i have seem yr penny mods. nice. i just have no skill/patience to do much more than turn a few screws. im really envious of the folks on here that have the B*&LLS to take a paint brush to their pt's interior.

There are other mods you can do to the stock intake to let more are in also. I cut out the inlet pipe & incresaed the ID to 3". Cost was about $8 for parts from Home Depot.

I have it going straight to fender with a scotch brite pad as a "gasket" to reduce vibration. Works as good as the $$$ K&N setup with MUCH LESS NOISE!!!

Welcome Don!! The K&N is a very simple install. 2 clips and the air box is open. I removed my air box spacer recently and it does help with throttle response. It will take 2 or 3 weeks for the car's computer to get used to the better air flow. Now you need to free it up on the back end. Do you have any plans with the muffler?

Dan
