Default 01 Cruiser Wants Some Power

Could I do a engine transplant from a newer GT cruiser?I was wondering if anyone has tried this and what all would need to be done... Im guessing I would need to change computers and that the tranny would bolt up (even though the new ones have the auto stick compared to my auto). I would also consider just getting the factory turbo and installing on my existing engine but I worry that my miles (65,000 +) would not let the motor long... I drive my car every day and probally to hard but I love it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You can add turbo, supercharging kits to the current engine, performance chips, nitrous oxide, exhaust systems, to name a few.

I'm no expert but those seem to be the things that would provide some immediate power gains. There's some folks on PTE that are pretty sharp and can provide more insightful info than I can...but it all comes down to;

"...speed costs money, how fast you want to go?..."

Thanks for the reply...
I have fully functional ram air, Jet chip (dont think it does much), and a flowmaster cat back... I would say that it runs better than stock but by no means a race car. I was just wondering if it possible to swap motors? I know of a wrecked GT near my house in a salvage yard...
I know the ideal thing to do would to go with the hahn kit but that would be out of the question for some time and by the time I could afford it I would probally have 90,000 pluss on the engine...
Thanks

if you're gonna do a swap out of a wrecked GT..why not take advantage of the entire running gear? That way you don't have to worry about the interchangeability. You already have the correct pedal setup with your auto. It should (I would think) all bolt right up. If not, the necessary mounts and brackets would be on the GT already . Would it cost less this way rather than going for an aftermarket turbo install? If nothing else, you're getting the beefed up lower end and the intercooler (if it's not crunched) of the GT engine..which is a big bonus compared to the aftermarket turbo-only installation.

as far as cost... Im not really sure how much I can get this for yet... I do know that it was rear ended and the drive train should be A-OK. The only reason I would do this rather than an aftermarket turbo is the high mile on my car. my luck I would shell out 2500-3000 for a turbo setup and tear something up due to the wear already on the car. Does anyone have an aftermarket turbo on a high mile cruiser? Also what do you mean by the whole running gear? engine, tranny, comp, etc... ??? Thanks

Better look at Bob Stockum's site to see the differences, esp the crank position sensor, computer, wiring harness, etc., http://www.bstockum.com/turboblock.html . The engine may bolt in, but It's really not an easy swap and you may/would need the services of an ignition expert. Might be easier just to build up your current engine, at least change the rods and pistons, plus upgrade the cam tensioner before going the Hahn turbo route.

Do you have the expertise to do this job? Both aftermarket and transplant will require considerable mechanical skill, tools, time not to mention money. If you really love the heck out of that car and plan on keeping it forever and meet the above requirements, and can afford to have your car torn apart for an extended period of time, then either is an option. Otherwise I would say get a factory turbo car.

I already checked into trading for a turbo but would loose my A$$ in that one... I have over $30,000 in this car already... The only thing I have left for it is Power... I have alott of knowledge as far as exterior, suspension, electronics go... I have done all of the work on my car myself. but this would be my first attempt at major engine mods. So I would probally opt to have someone do the work for me. But it seams that this would not be an easy switch as I once hoped. I have also seen the factory turbo's on ebay... manifold, turbo, They say that all i would need would be the oil lines and such... I would need an intercooler also (poss. probe one). How does the computer work with the hahn kit? is there an upgrade like what wipple has for their supercharger?
In any case I do love this ride and will (with a little luck) have it forever...
Thanks

Talking POWER

I have a Hahn Turbo with a B stockum motor Iam very happy. I was in the same place as u by looking at your goddie list. If I had a stock PT I would trade. But not willing to loose my shirt on car. The price on a used pt is crap and will be the same on the turbos in a while. I live in upstate NY and my brother is a wholesaler . He can buy a 2001 limited auto with 25,000 miles for about 12,000 large at the major auctions He got a silver and a white last week. Also dealers could care less if u have a ton of xtras onyour car. they usually wont give u more than wholesale. If u love your car and it looks like u do from the amount of cash u took out of your kids college fund , upgrade your motor do a turbo or Whipple SC.and have fun . Will someone have a faster car your Dam right someone will. I have almost 4,000 miles on my turbo and the only code I have is 0401 egr code which was due to a vacuum line that needed two zip ties to hold it on,instead of one. Iam not a real wrenchhead like a lot of the guys but half of the fun is learning to play the game.If I have a question about plugs or something minor and I call Bob S. he always makes time that is not only the sign of a good mechanic but a true friend . Just in case your wondering I run my car hard Flashback will back me on that . My motto DRIVE IT LIKE U STOLE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what to tell you...I do know that swapping in a GT powertrain has got to be a very time consuming and difficult swap . I didn't have as much in my old cruiser as you do and was able to "safely" upgrade to a GT thanks to DC rebates and my abilities ( stripping the the car of aftermarket items). I did this with full knowledge of the trade-in dealer as most of you know they don't "give" you any extra for most mods . Reason I state that it is going to be difficult is that you'll have to change you pcm to the GT's and then you'll have to move the wiring harness also and that's where I think your issues would start . Phatdad runs his car....as do I so ....all I can say is get a hahn turbo built motor and keep your '01 or strip your '01, trade it in, and get a GT and recycle what you strip as I did .
