Default Service Engine Light - No Codes

for the second time, the check engine light has come on after a spark plug change...

31,000 miles, dealer service dept. changed sparkplugs, with-in 750 miles light came on...

EGR valve failed/replaced....

63,000 miles, dealer service dept. changed sparkplugs, with-in 750 miles light comes on...

either time there were/are no codes that i could pull up... no faults is all it displays...

this time i am not yet sure why it came on, it did it this morning, saturday, and sevice dept. is closed for the week-end...

any ideas?

champion double platinum plugs both times...

nothing has been done internal/external to engine as far as changes...

K&N drop-in filter is the only "mod"... has been in since the first month... cleaned and re-oiled at 48,000 service

MX-5 wire snip for the transmission shift...

mobil-1 5w30 engine oil since first change...

i just cannot believe an EGR valve is good for only 30,000 miles...

each time it has been a different DC 5 star dealer service dept....

early edition '01, so all upgrades/flashes have been done on the ECM...

has not, does not run rough, idle is smooth, no apparent loss of power... same situation the first time...

so... there you go boys and girls, any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated...

thanks...

If the light is on and lighted steady, you have codes to be read.

If it blinks and does not remain lit, you have pending codes that require a scanner to access.

The EGR tube is disconnected during a plug change, this could account for the early failure. That would be under the heading "human factor".

I changed another set of plugs during our dyno day this morning. There's never been a MIL lit from any of the PTs I've done.

Be sure to post the results in this thread.

on the first one, after 2-3 days of driving while waiting for valve to come in, light went off and stayed off...

'self healing'?

That sounds suspiciously like a loose gas cap.

Clear thos code and reseat the gas cap. Make sure it clicks 3 times.

If it comes back, you may need diagnosis.

Record the radio presets and then unhook the battery negative cable. Step on the bakes. The brake lights bulbs will drain any residual power from the energy reserve module.

Connect the battery cable and program the radio.
The engine will relearn the fuel curves during the first 30 minutes of driving. It may react strangely for a few minutes.
All will be well again.

The battery cable uses a 10mm wrench.

MX-5, as usual, you were right... but it was not loose, it evidently had failed...

took your advice, cleared the ECM, made sure cap was tight, light came back on with-in 1 mile...

tried it again, cleaned the gas cap flange, wiped the tank filler tube, cleared the ECM, light came back on in a mile or so...

took a chance, stopped by a DC dealer, bought a new gas cap, changed it and again cleared ECM, no light in over 150 miles...

Thank you Sir....
