Default Cam installation

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a shop in the NYC area that has done the Crane cam install??, or can this be done by a relative novice with lots of time..

Also, does anyone have a definative list of all the parts, both necessary and recommended that I should get to do the job right.

I've already installed a new air intake, borla dual exhaust, hedman 4-2-1 header and nology wires.

After the new cams go in I plan on adding the kenne bell supercharger as well as their computer upgrade...

Any thoughts on whether this might be too much for the stock automatic tranny??

Thanks everyone for the great info on these forums, my PT appreciates it, my wallet however, hates you all. hehehe

Norm

It's not an easy job . The engine mounts have to be removed /lossened in order to remove replace cams and time them, etc. There's a lot of removal necessary just to get the cam belt off and even more to install/time the new cams. Unless you're an experienced mechanic and have a better than average set of tools...things like t50 torx, jackstands, hydraulic jack ,torque wrenches etc...not recommended !

It's a pretty big job putting the cams in Norm, How far are you away from Bob Stockum's, this is his web site http://www.bstockum.com/ There are other parts that you will need to upgrade which are at his web site. Did You talk to someone at Kenne Bell or just go to their web site. I know their site says they have the SC for the PT, it's been saying that for over a year and when I talked to them in Jan.03 they said it wasn't ready for shipping, You might want to consider the Turbo, Bob can make them fly, and he can do all the work at his place, let's see, Turbo and cams, Opps, too much horse power, need to change the Rods and Pistons and you will need the Cam Tensioner upgrade, might as well get the intercooler. When you do the rods and pistons might as well have the head done, ported, polished and SS valves. What's that I hear screaming, is it your wallet

Or you can install the Kenne Bell supercharger and intercooler which is now available for sale and avoid most of that.

Now i'm getting a bit confused.....

On a different post it was stated that at about 215 hp a rod & piston change is necessary, Both me and my wallet don't want to get into that.

Should I:

a) Go for the whipple and forget the cam upgrade, the s/c + exhaust/header/intake should put me just below the 215 level.

b) Install the cams + computer upgrade and forget about the s/c

c) trade in for a GT (really dont want to do this)

BTW, after reading alot about the kenne bell "experience" and whipple, I think the whipple is the overall better product. Think I would have race and street do the install, they're relatively close.

Norm,

Do you live on the East Coast or the West Coast?

If you live on the East Coast, talking to Bob Stockum makes a lot of sense. He's the Turbo "guru" and can probably set you up for a lot less than you think. Of course, if you want to go with a Whipple, talk to Race & Street.

If you live on the West Coast and you want to go with a Whipple...the BEST in my opinion is PT-Tuning.

Cams...forget it. It's a pain to do assuming you can find someone to do the install. Cost vs. the performance gain just isn't worth it. My opinion, of course; some may disagree.

Hey PT Pink... so you just added whipple without any cam change? What about tensioner? so you get about 215hp w/ that setup?

Talking cams

I would call B.Stockum he knows cams and a few other things to . I also live in N.Y. .Its a 7.5 hr ride. U can get round trip air fare for about 200 dollars if u want to leave your car I would highly recommend index gears ,they made the world of difference in getting the car to run wright. I had the chance to ride in flashbacks car it was cammed ,intake and exhaust it was impressive compared to stock. I also looked into kenny bell sc through a install shop in Niagara Falls that is certified to do his install . He called me back after talking with techsat KB. they were having big time fuelmgmt problems this was in Dec 2002. I would not want to be a east coast guinea pig for a new product. I also feel anybody who does forced induction should do the timming upgrade. When u are looking at spending that kind of money whats a nother 3-400 dollars. Going fast is only part of it .Going fast time and time again without Breaking is what its all about . Whatever u do have fun.
