Once you get used to it, you make make autostick do what you want it to, without fear of hurting the engine. For me, I start in 1st and let it shift itself into 2nd. When you know what the maximun speed the GT will be at for you to downshift, all is good. In 3rd, 60mph is teh highest speed I can be at downshift to 2nd. Fun stuff.
I love stick, but autostick suited my needs...depends on if its your daily driver, traffic....etc

Does yours do the shift burp that others talk about? I like the auto but don't want that shift burp.

auto stick felt wierd. I'd run up the rpms and hit the shift and it'd would pause before it would shift. I'd almost have to look at the gauge to make sure it shifted. Drove a 5spd. Can't beat the Getrag manual. Even the Hurst shifter in my PT feels sloppy and loose compared to that. Only thing I found odd was the placeement of the reverse on the lower left of the shift gate. Esp, since it's only a 5spd not 6, seems a little stupid.

Default Shift Burp

Unfortunately, they ALL do the "shift burp" deal! I think the idea is that by cutting back the fuel to the engine at 5,500 RPM the shift into 2nd gear will be "easier" on the transmission. The more you mod the motor the better the "burp" gets. There is no known "fix" for it yet, but there probably will be before too long. There are some advantages to the automatic that nobody has mentioned. The fact that the Turbo doesn't "unload" between shifts is a good thing for the automatic, no time wasted rebuilding the boost level at each shift. Also the fact that the torque convertor allows the engine to get into boost very quickly is a huge help! They launch pretty well, too.

True! That Getrag tranny is such a cool performance upgrade that I can't imagine anyone getting a turbo and not wanting it, unless they just plain prefer an auto tranny. Get the five-speed and enjoy!
