Default SRT-4 exhaust ?

did anyone read the article re: SRT-4 on the PT links page? it said that the exhaust exits the cat and splits into duals with NO MUFFLERS. With all of the questions about exhaust systems for the PTGT ,has anyone with a GT tried unbolting the muffler?
I forget, is the muffler welded on or bolted on? Justa thought...

I have done this to a Grand National. At idle it sounded like a ski boat. With the burbble sound. While driving it sounded like single chamber Flowmasters. On boost it went almost silent! It just had a swooshing sound.

Oh it had a tubed cat as well. ( holow and a piece of exhaust tube running through it to keep the flow, very illegal)

So i dont thing sound would be to much of a problem as the turbo eats most of it.

Pretty sure the SRT-4 has a resonator in there instead of mufflers to control the sound a bit.

Maybe so, BUT.... it doesn't say so (quoted from the mag)

The result is an exhaust note that manages to be both authoritative and mellow — far from quiet, particularly at full throttle, but pleasing to an ear predisposed to enjoy the music of vigorous internal combustion.

I heard the same thing - no mufflers or resonators at all. They are relying on the newly designed Cat for noise supression...

If there are no mufflers, technically, it would be illegal to drive an SRT-4 on South Carolina roads. Law requires a properly functioning muffler be on a car here...maybe the law will just have to change.

This is from a review in Sport Compact Car:

Out back, the rear valence has two exhaust exits spaced symmetrically on each side. We've never understood the point in splitting the exhaust on an inline engine. Zweidler and Bayer don't either, but say function was forced to follow form. The engineering retaliation was simple: The SRT-4 has no mufflers, which helps make up for the compromised exhaust routing. That's right, there's a turbo, a catalytic converter and two resonators in the exhaust system, but no actual mufflers. Again, the engineers insist this will make it to production. We'll be impressed if it does as the SRT-4 sounds as pissed as it acts. Burbling under engine braking and spitting backfires under hard acceleration gives us some doubts about the production readiness of the exhaust system, but we absolutely love it.

opps i missed the no muffler quote part above...

Something else that's unusual is the exhaust system. The exhaust manifold is integrated with the turbine housing for better flow, tidier packaging, and quicker catalytic light-off. From the cat, the exhaust splits into two channels that culminate in two chrome exhaust-pipe tips. The unusual part is what's missing, as in mufflers
