Unhappy Chrysler on Rough Idle

Well, two months with the new PT and its been back to the service department 3 times for rough idle. They are still telling me that everything is fine. NOT! This last time the dealer called DC in Michigan. Seem they are aware of the problem. Chrysler's story is that the F/A mixture is leaned out to support lower emissions at idle. This makes some PTs idle rough and some not.
Not satified, I called DC myself. They opened a file on my PT and are contacting the district manager that covers the dealership that I bought the PT from. Maybe if all PT owners who are experiencing a rough idle, that cannot be fixed, give Chrysler a call they will get a TSB or computer flash that will fix this problem.
Here is the 800 number for Chrysler in Michigan.

1-800-992-1997

Hmm, funny, my PT has had a rough idle since Day One. I didn't really think much of it, other than it being odd for a brand new engine. All of us with bumpy idles should keep in touch. (By the way, my PT was purchased May 2nd. Built in December, if I remember correctly.)

Don't put up with a rough idle. Mine is smooth at 750 RPM. Just tell the dealer you want yours to be like their demo PT (or demo Caravan w/2.5L engine, or Stratus w/2.5L engine). If dealer throws up his hands, try another dealer or go to Chrysler.

I did one better than compare my PT's idle to an on lot demo. My sister bought her PT at the same time from the same dealer. Hers runs smooth as glass. The dealer had a hard time explaining that one.

I took this to Chrysler. I will post any response I get from Michigan.

In the mean time, if your PT is running rough, give DC a call at their 800 number.

I noticed the rough idle on the first PT I test drove. So I checked several others on the lot and all were the same. Including the one I ended with from another dealer.

I'd be interested in knowing the fix for this problem whenever it's discovered. I don't think we're going to get much cooperation form dealers if this is such a common problem, unless we already know how to fix it.

When I was test driving PT's, almost all of them idled as smooth as glass. The only problem I noticed was, on some of them, there was a slight engine roughness at 40-50mph and that was the main reason I ended up buying the 5-speed. Think there was a computer upgrade that addressed the idle problem. Might want to check your dealer and see if they can flash your computer to the latest revision and check for a loose or bad plug wire. I should also note that if you test drive other makes and models, you will find their cars differ too. My sister drove 5 different Monte Carlos before she found one that was acceptable to her.

Cool

Rough idle update.
The dealer and the folks at DC still have been no help. However, I just took the PT for a cruise to Montreal (from Cleveland) and it seems that the 1500 mile ride helped. Go figure. Either that or the Canadians put something in their gas. Whatever, the PT is idling better since I got back.

Happy Canada Day!

I took my cruiser to the dealer and they couldn't find anything. So I replaced the plugs with the double platinum 7440 and no change. Don't know what I'll try next.

Anyone find a "sure fire" fix yet to this rough idle problem? (pun intended)

I have a 2001 PT with an automatic transmission and am having trouble keeping it running when I take my foot off the gas and brake at a stop light. This is an intermittent problem that has become more frequent lately. The car dies and it will not start for about 20 min. Has anyone else experienced this. My dealer say he has done all he can do. Could this be related to the rough idle problem?

Welp, I'm in the same boat as the rest of you folks, bad thing for me is I work for a Chrysler Dealership and I still can't get mine right. My car runs bad all the time, idle and take off, in the mornings when its cold is the worse so I spoke to our rep the other day and he told me they knew that the 2.4 (not the 2.5) has a issue with a suttle miss and that there is a new flash code for the computor to change the EGR valve settings, we did this to my car and............no help, still the same if not worse, I just don't know about it, but I have a 5 speed car and it really sucks going though the gears and the thing is jerking because of miss....we'll see I guess, hate to file lemon law but hey, this aint cuttin it.....be cool, James
