Default Brakes

We have a 2002 PT Touring, 5 speed with just over 24000 miles. The left rear brake pad is completely shot, and now wearing out the rotor. The other three brakes still have more than half of the pad left. I have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow. Has anyone else seen this on their PT?

Thanks in advance...

sounds like one of your calipers is hung up causing wear on the pad unequal to the rest of the calipers.

That's what I told the dealer, they said "we need to look at it". I agreed.

Along with that @#!%% automatic transmission, brakes on the PT have got to be the most commonly reported fault. I agree....let the dealer do only that which only they can do. You can get brakes done better and a lot cheaper at independent and some chain shops.

With 131,000 miles on my PT, I have gotten to know brakes well! Even now with ceramic pads and all new hardware, I have one hanging up, producing lots of brake dust (the other wheels produce almost none) and scratching up the new rotor. She'll be back in the brake shop on Wednesday.

Blessings

Just got a call from the dealer, just as I had thought, the left rear caliper froze up. They will cover it under warranty!! He offered to do the right side at the same time if I wanted to pay for it. Just out of curiosity, I asked how much that would cost. He said the pads were $80.00, but since I only needed to pay for half a set, they would be $40.00, plus the rotor was another $64 and change, adding in labor it would probably run about $140-$150. I told him to just do the warranty work, and I would take care of the other side myself. Unfortunately, they don't have the caliper in stock, but they can have it by noon tomorrow, so I should have the car back by tomorrow night.

I don't let the dealer do anymore work than is covered under warranty.....

gotta keep those caliper pins lubed with good brake lube and check the grease boots anytime the wheels come off.

Just did front brakes and rotors for $150 in parts, so you can do better than the dealer price for sure. And Rally's right, make sure you lube the pins with the proper brake lube.

I have never heard of brake lube, is there a particular kind I should get?
