Question Day Time Running lights?

Are daytime running light available only in Canada? Just wondering, have seen a couple of Cruisers with dim lights in front and no tail lights.

In the early days there was a shortage of Cruisers in the US it maybe from Canada eh. I heard that a number of dealerships in 2000/2001 picked up PT's from Canada.

Sounds like a regulator problem! The DRLs in Canada, on most DC vehicles, are the TURN SIGNAL BULBS on HIGH power (the turn filament is on, not the running-light filament).

I got a DRL module from JC Whitney that taps into the headlight wiring. It uses a 'sensor' wire, which you simply wrap around a spark plug wire, to detect when the engine is running. The module turns the lights on at reduced brightness while the engine is on and turns them off about 6 seconds after the engine is stopped. Works very well, and I don't find that I forget to turn the headlights on fully when it gets dark. The module itself is very easy to install, is inexpensive, Made In Canada and works well. The only tough part is getting to the headlamp wires.

I asked a Dealership in BC what it would take to put the real DRL's on my car, but it would have cost $300 or more, plus a reprogramming trip to the dealership. (A whole new instrument cluster is needed.)

I find that I never use the 'auxillary driving lights' (aka, "Fog Lights") that I have, but will likely use them in the summer when it's light out more often for more notable visibility towards others. (Of course, when isn't it light here in the summer?)

Today was a perfect example of DRL time ... fresh snow and a bright, cloudy sky. Ack!

I came up with my own Daylight system to light up the fog lights. I rewired them to a relay that was a switched scorce with the key. But at retail costs it was not much cheeper than the kit mentioned above. I bought: a roll of wire, relay, 2 replacement bulb sockets.

The JC Whitney price is only $12 and is is warrentied. So that may be the better deal if anybody wants them.

The JCW part.... http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/...X&appId=523868

Kind of glad we were able to avoid that whole DRL thing, myself.

Just curious but why would that be? They add very little to the initial cost of a vehicle, they are maintenance free, require no driver input and make your vehicle more visible to oncoming traffic, especially in the sun. Maybe I'm missing something here but, I don't see the negative.

I actually had one of the very first vehicles to have them up here in Canada. I bought a 1990 Nissan Axxess in May 1989. I had lots of drivers flashing their lights at me at first but, soon enough, they were everywhere. They have been required here since the 1990 model year.

According to my 2002 Shop manual, the option for daytime running lights (actually the turn signal lights) was a result of a different wiring harness. The schematics show a splice notice.

Now if they could only get the tail lights to go "ON" at the same time that would be great. Try to spot the gray car in front of you in the rain on the Hwy with no tail lights.
