Default What do the PT and the SSR have in common?

Just got my SSR back from the dealership after some work on a minor roof problem (hydraulic lines getting caught up in hinges). Much to my surprise, when I got it home I opened the hood and they had completely mangled my hood prop!!! Kind of reminded me of the early days of the PT when dealerships did not know about the hood prop and closed the hood, even forced it closed, resulting in a dented hood! Fortunately Chevy made this hood of the thickest steel in the world! It actually takes me both hands to lift it because of the weight! Unfortunately the hood prop is about the diameter of a tooth pic. Go figure! Where are the gas struts for such a heavy hood? My prop looked like a linguini noodle but I was able to straighten it out somewhat but it is still pretty disfigured. I called GM and there is currently no TSB on the hood prop or anything else for that matter. Other SSR owners have expressed the same concern with the props bending and collapsing under the weight of the hood. I just hope they give me a new one.

You would think that with a hood that size, GM would use something other than a prop rod. Maybe Blaine can make a set to fit it. Oh, by the way, I LOVE THAT SSR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear that Ed.
You would figure with the kind of Price Tag associated with the Chevy SSR, you would think that they would supply a Half Decent Hood Prop.

Have you checked the surface of your hood to see if Joe Mechanic tried closing the hood while the prop was in place just as so many did when the PT were first introduced?
The surface could have been dented (hopefully not).

Your Ride looks SHARP Ed.

Hard to keep the dirt off?
When are you going to hook up your Surf Board like you had on your PT in the earlier years?

It is indeed a "Sweet, Sweet, Ride" and every day I am thankful for being able to get this baby at a reasonable price instead of the way out of proportion prizes others have paid. If you search the web, there are dealers out there selling at MSRP. SSRfanatics.com has posted dealers who are doing just that. They actually closed the hood on the bent prop rod and it did not ding the hood at all. Just left a little scuff mark. I just found it fascinating that both of these retro cars had the same problem. When you step on the gas, you get catapulted back into your seat like you would not believe. The tranny in this baby is soooo powerful. Take care you guys. Will keep ya posted...Ed

A flimsy hood prop in a $40,000 car. GM strikes again.

Actually, MSRP is more like 42K for the 1SB (base model) and MSRP for the fully loaded one like mine is closer to 46K. YOu can up that up if you add even more of the extras like running boards and such. You are right, for what I paid, I would expect a hood prop that would support the hood. Just glad the hood did not get mangled and they just trashed the prop rod instead. That hood weighs as much as the one on an old 49 Packard that I had in the early 70's.
