PT started as the platfrom designation. I forget exactly, but I think the neon was a PR (or was it PN?) and the PT was the paltform designation for the original prototype which was built on a neon platform. The PT stuck and was then said to stand for "personal transportation". Anyone else remember the engineers saying this at the PT Museum event?
