Quote:
If someone has their monitor set to 800 x 600, a 640 x 480 will fill about 75% of their screen. 75% signal to noise ratio seems mighty high, especially when the same pic appears over and over.

Most forums limit the signature picture to 200 X 150 and a maximum of 3 text lines to keep the signatures from over shadowing the actual post or reply. Also, posting a business link in your signature, advertising products that you may sell or have a financial interest in, etc., is usually prohibited unless you become a sponsor of that site or forum.
Below is an example from a site I frequent and the rules are pretty strict due to many product reviews submitted by members. And there is at least one moderator assigned just to patrol the signatures: "Signatures are a nice feature designed to save you the trouble of having to type your name at the end of each message. A proper signature will be one to three lines (3 lines maximum) long. Please do not use your signature as an opportunity to advertise or spread your political point of view. If you have a home page, you can add a link to your signature, but one link is the limit. Adding graphics and photos is not permitted as it distracts from reading messages and increases download time. Signatures must: 1. Be limited to 3 lines total. 2. May not contain pictures. 3. May not be commercial in nature (please, no business or product promotion). Links allowed: 1. Links to pictures of cars you own. 2. Links to your personal web page. 3. Links to your personal photo album. Links not allowed: 1. Links to commercial web sites to which you are affilaited. 2. Links to adult sites or offensive material. The Moderators of this forum reserve the right to remove signatures that do not meet the above standards or that are deemed inappropriate for this public forum." Can also visit Tactical Ops Forum and multiple images are allowed ONLY if they fit within the 200 (high) X 500 (wide) pixels and the maximum file size is 40kb (If you use multiple images, the sum is taken.) They also allow a max of 6 text lines below your signature picture. Every forum has it rules about signatures and the general etiquette is to try to limit the size and space used and try to limit the frequency on which it shows up to one per topic (or less) or just limit signatures to topic starters only. If you have many mods, it is often better to provide a link in your signature to your photo album or personal website, where you can properly list them and show them off with pictures, descriptions, etc. |

I'm sure that my signature pic was one of the offending ones mentioned. I had attached it recently, and in one post, I actually asked if it was considered to be too big, as I thought it did seem to be a bit on the large side. I waited to see if anyone was going to comment on it's size seeing as I had openly questioned it. Nobody said a thing, so I thought maybe it couldn't have been that bad. I left it as is as I am not all that computer literate and I would have needed my sons guidance to downsize the pic. All is fixed now. As far as this subject goes, maybe next time one of us has a signature pic that is considered to be too large, the moderator could PM us to let us know. That way we don't have to waste extra space on polls. Just a friendly thought.

cokebear1 yours wasn't even close to the size of some of the ones I have seen. Some are rather large, and some get carried away with lots of large multiple photos and list of the things done to their cruisers. Actually your size doens't look to bad. Most seem to be voting on the 200 x 200 size. Which may seem small, unless you are running at a smaller resolution on your computer. I run at 1024x768 and it looks ok......

FYI - the limits built in to vBulletin for signatures make management on my end sort-of difficult.
As it is, vB 3.0 (the new version we are running now) has more standard features for managing sigs. I can, if I choose, limit people to just text and then set the max number of characters. I choose to not do that. Previously, I had a hack installed that allowed people to upload their signature picture and I fully had planned on disabling images through the [img ] tag. However, the disabling in vB 2.2.6 was not something that could easily be done (that won't be a problem this time around). Once the vB 3.0 version of that signature hack/feature is released, I'll put it on the PT Forums and will disable all but text in the 'regular signature'. Unfortunately, that may be a couple of months out. Until then, I'd prefer people stick with images no wider than 320, no taller than 240 (preferably 120)...that helps prevent throwing the entire layout of the forums pages out of whack. Thanks.
