Default a few odd problems

Sunday evening I saw a Cranberry PT Cruiser owner looking rather distraught at a coin-op car wash. While I was vacuuming my car, he came up to me and asked if I've ever had a problem with the key not turning in the ignition. Apparently, his steering wheel was locked, with the little black button by the ignition stuck in the depressed position, and the key would not turn in the ignition.

This morning on my way to work, my front power windows would not roll down. I discovered this AFTER lighting a cigarette. So, the whole way to work I was ashing out of the sun roof. I arrived at work, turned my car off then on again and the windows worked fine. Has anyone else had odd problems like these?

The steering wheel lock sometimes interferes with the ignition switch. The fix is to try to wiggle the steering wheel until it frees the key. For the power windows, first I'd reccommend quitting smoking. No really, that's a new one on me. Electrical problems scare me. FIRE! FIRE!

Yeah, I think I read somewhere that cigarettes are bad for you.

Lightbulb

Just this past weekend my ignition switch failed. I shook and played around with the key, but it would do nothing. It was like I had the wrong key - or wrong car. The dealer replaced the lock tumbler and rekeyed it - under warranty. Not too big a problem.

Except, it was Sunday afternoon when it failed and I was 75 miles from home. Roadside Assistance offered to drop me and the PT off at the nearest DC dealer (which was closed Monday.) Big help there! I had Auto Club take it to the nearest dealer that was open the next day.

The wierd thing is that my wife's Town & Country had the same problem a little more than a month ago. DC said the lock tumbler is not part of the ignition switch and, therefore, it was not covered - $244.00.

Welcome to PTE Irish Pat !!!

Everything should be covered except items listed below:
Glass, Plastic lenses;
Body and Paint items, including soft trim;
Snow Plows, winches and trailer hitches;
Wear Items such as manual clutch assembly, brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, and belts are not covered at any time.

Would file a protest or complaint to your area Chrysler Rep if you were still under warranty or extended warranty.

Buckeye_43220 - I've had the ignition switch lock up on my Ford due to the steering wheel lock that tourin_john made reference to. I also remember someone posting about the power window problem you mentioned.

Irish Pat - Welcome to PTE also! What did Road Assistance expect you to do when they dropped you off at a dealer that was closed for a couple of days...walk home. A lot of good that would do.

Speaking of DC electrical problems, my old Dodge Daytona Shelby ('88) Z's hidden headlights would fail every blue moon or so. I would then use the manual knobs to crank them up (lots of fun). Then, the next day, the headlights would pop up and down just fine electrically and keep working for another long, long time. Naturally, I couldn't get them fixed, since the problem occurred so seldom. This went on for over a decade. Electrical problems can be just weird sometimes.

My dad's '96 F-150 is horrible for it. Sometimes you really have to wiggle that wheel though. (Somehow that doesn't sound innocent...) I got really pissed once when it was being stubborn and start shaking it so hard the truck was rocking back and forth. It finally came loose, but just goes to show ya how stupid some things can be.

(Okay, now that really doesn't sound good!)

About the second or third time I ran the air conditioning in my PT, it cycled off going up a hill under load, and would not come back on like it should have. After stopping and restarting the car, it came back on again. Took it to the dealer, and they could not find anything wrong. It has never done it again since, even under the same circumstances. The black button on my ignition switch has been stuck in since I got the car. This makes it nice because I don't have to push it in to get the key out. Never had trouble removing the key though.

I have also heard of similar problems, but never any with mine!
