That's not right on their part to tell you to turn them off while you are parked on private property..

Here in Ontario, Canada, three colors are illegal to have..
BLUE(Snow Removal Equipment);
RED (Police and Emergency Vehicles) and
GREEN ( don't know why Green, but it May be because it is the Volunteer Firemen Color).

I have Purple Washer Nozzles and Purple Fog Lights and I have them on while driving (most time) and have faced Police Cruisers many times and I haven't received any hassles or warning. Purple is used for Funerals on the Hearsts.

Okay, here's the deal. Oklahoma Law says that you cannot display any light brighter than 300 candlepower, so exactly how bright are our neons? Also, my neons are green and Oklahoma only has laws against red, blue, and flashing lights. What really makes me mad is that they tried to tell me to turn them off last night while I was parked at a Drive-In Restaurant.

That's the type of law that police in California use. We also have a law on the books that states that lights must be tested to prove that they are below the maximum candle power before they can be legal on the street. None of the companies that make the lights will submit their lights to the test because it would cost them money. You might check to see if your state has a law like that.

Trasen,

this was in the paper a while back in a column a guy writes regarding various traffic issues. The writer was from Edmond and got a ticket for neons on a motorcycle. Here's a paraphrase of the response:

Quote:
The Edmond city ordinance's "catch-all" paragraph kicks it back to Title 47 of the state statutes. If you look at 47-12-203, 47-12-204 and 47-12-209, you will see specific references to the colors that are accepted. Nothing else. That means, as one Department of Public Safety source told me, ground effects lights such as you describe, whether on a motorcycle, car or truck, are not acceptable in Oklahoma.
I know several people with neons on their PTs but have never known anyone to have any trouble as long as the vehicle was not on the street.

I looked those up and they don't really pertain to our type of lighting at all. Here's the one that sort of covers our lighting, 47-12-227:

A. Any lighted lamp or illuminating device upon a motor vehicle, other
than head lamps, spot lamps, auxiliary lamps, flashing turn signals,
emergency vehicle warning lamps, construction and maintenance vehicle
warning lamps, and school bus warning lamps, which projects a beam of
light of an intensity greater than three hundred (300) candlepower
shall be so directed that no part of the high intensity portion of the
beam will strike the level of the roadway on which the vehicle stands
at a distance of more than seventy-five (75) feet from the vehicle.

the sense that I've gotten is that "if it's not specified as being legal then it's illegal." yeah, right.
