Unhappy 2300 Miles - Tranny Ate Itself

Bad news - the clutch, flywheel and throw-out bearings went out on our 2003 turbo with only 2300 miles and at an age of ~3 months. Dealer is being helpful, but we're a little disappointed. Anyone have similar problems, or suggestions as to the cause?

P.S. It was out of the range of the recall. Ours was built in Dec. 2002.

That's a bummer. My 5-speed GT was built in Dec '02 also. Let us know what you find..... What island are you on? I grew up on Oahu.

Did you have the recall done? there was a recall on 2003 PT turbo clutches - I did not read exactly what happens when the clutch pin on th eturbo fails, but i suspect it could be pretty catastrophic.

whops - in addendum to my note above - I just noticed that you said it was outside of the range of the recall - I went back through my information on the recall, and it did say built through 11/29/02. This seems to be awfully close - it would seem to me that you could argue that some cars may have slipped by (you know, the date on the door being the completed date, and that the clutch was put in before the cut off date/). Anyway, this seems like something you could argue - It CAN't be coincidence......

good luck!

I'm on the Big Island. Spent a little time on Oahu. Like it here better

The dealer's making sure it's warranty work, but I'm curious as to the cause and will have to find out if it is the same issue that affects the earlier production. Will keep the forum updated as I am.

Still without the Cruiser. Dealer is waiting on parts. I'm not happy - but I figure I'd keep everyone posted.

Got the Cruiser back last Thursday... new clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, slave cylinder. Runs good, shifts are a little odd, but okay... today ~500 miles later same grinding noise that preceded total failure. Time for a refund and a new different (brand) car?

I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience with your PT. Stories like that are very rare, if they give you another PT its bound to be a good one. My 02 5 speed has 32K and has only been back to the dealer for a spark plug change. I do think of the rare problem PTs when I think of trading up tho. Thanks for the update and let us know what you decide.
