Default Painting my modesty cover.. Need input

Okay I am now ready to try my hand at painting my modesty cover. I need to know what you all did about the rubber grommets. I have been told that after time the paint will bubble and crack on them. I need to know what I have to do to keep them from doing that. I am using the same paint that Kat used.
Thanks!!
I also need to know how many coats of each I will need to apply.

I'm next--but even further behind--what kind of paint did Kat use?

Thanks!

You can buy the paint at Wal-Mart/K-Mart. It comes in a set of 3 cans, base coat, color, and the clearcoat. It is called Mirage.

Thanks Ms. Boop. I wonder if Walmart carries the Aztec Gold version?

Yes, the paint will peel off the rubber grommets. BUT, when mine peeled off, it peeled off perfectly and didn't affect the painted plastic surface. I used a plastic adhesion primer, standard auto paint and clear coat, after washing the cover down thoroughly with soapy water then white spirits. You have to ensure that it is perfectly clean before any painting is done.

As for how many coats? Just one decent coat of plastic adhesion primer will be sufficient. Colour? I did 4 thin coats to achieve full coverage. Top coated with 3 or 4 coats and that was it. It's better to spray too little than too much. Dribbles are not fun!!! Also, make sure the weather is perfectly clear and you've had no rain the couple of days prior otherwise your newly painted surface may go cloudy...

I used that same painting system on mine and havent' had any peeling yet on the grommets. I used 3-4 coats for each step, careful not to put it on too heavy.

I used a couple coats of Rustoleum and have no cracking problems...you should be fine...don't worry about the grommets...

Thanks everyone for your help. Yesterday was the first day we have had no rain. I will wait a couple of days before I start this project.

find all the info you need at : www.ptdoityourself.net
PT Guides/Underhood guides/ Engine Painting & Engine Dress up.

Mine's the last one featured in Dress up (some seriously OLD pics. LOTS more chrome & billet these days).

I used the same paint as you & there are DETAILED instructions at PTDIY. In your favor the mirage paint is EXCEPTIONALLY easy to use & gives great results even to those of us with little/NO patience ( such as myself)...
Good luck & most of all---HAVE FUN .
PS- "Fog Coats" are the best strategy...folowed by regular coats. Prep is THE most important. Wash that puppy well. BTW , I followed the mirage systems instructions to the letter & had wonderful results. This paint hides any "oopsies" you might make....like a little too thin, or thick , etc. If you need to sand & belnd the Mirage is one of the easies, since it shifts color & the blend is this much harder to detect. Oh & you aksed about the rubber sections on top...I just masked them off. No biggie.

You'll do fine. Seriously!
Don't forget to post pics.

Those grommets come out pretty easy ,but first you must put something greasy around the bottom of them.
