Default bigger tires

has anyone with the GTs 17 inch wheels put any bigger tires on and if so what size?

I don't have a GT (want one, just don't have one) but have you tried Tire Rack's web site, www.tirerack.com? They guarantee every fitment they recommend.
That will give you some idea of tire sizes that will work. I would be very surprised if 225/45-17 and 235/45-17 tires wouldn't fit.

The idea behind upping sizes it to keep the overall height (and hence circumference), the same to avoid speedometer and odometer errors.

Here is a good site to use to calculate what sizes match the OEM 205 55 16. (typically, a "PLUS ONE" calculation on OEM would be 215 45 17)

If you are planning to keep the factory wheels then I believe a 215/45-17 is at your limit; the factory rims are pretty narrow. Just to be sure, go to Tire rack's site and look at a tire you may consider buying, click on "SPECS" and it will give the actual dimensions of the tire. One of the critical listings will be "RIM WIDTH RANGE", that will tell you if a certain size tire can be squeezed SAFELY onto the narrow factory size.

Most 17 inch tires favor wider rims, though. If you really want the "wide look" then you may have to upgrade to a wider rim -and you thought the sticker price was high on the GT, wait 'til you price some fancy 17" and bigger wheels. OUCH.

My Speedo is really out wack now.
