Going for the MAX to Niagara eh! I run my tires at 32PSI ( my goodyear guys say 30 would be more appropriate) and my mileage is a consistent 9L/100KM (26.5MPG for our US freinds) for my daily combination of 60/40 city/hwy driving. Honestly I would not exceed 38PSI cold. Since the MAX rated pressure for the tires is 44PSI and you will gain at least 4 PSI with heat buildup on the HWY. Drive safe and have fun!

PT came with 34 psi at delivery, and I think that is what it recommends on the door panel. Just pumped them up to 40 last week to try and improve milage. That leaves me 4 psi for expansion before reaching the max of 44. Most of my driving is between 35 and 60 mph in our semi-rural area. If I don't notice a real good gain in milage after a couple of weeks will probably drop it to 38 as BluesCruiser did.

I'm no expert but I believe it's best to run the recommended pressure. Experience has shown me that running underinflated causes uneven tread wear and premature failure. The same holds true for overinflating. It would seem a shame to save pennies on gas but throw dollars at new tires. Aren't opinions a beautiful thing?

Didn't we learn anything from the Explorer/Firestone fiasco ? The auto manufacturer's tire recommendation is a compromise to get a reasonable ride,mileage, and handling.It is often based on data from a number of different tire size/manufacturer's/designs.
I suggest you follow the actual recommendations on the tire itself.They have done the testing and are confident in what the tire can do.If they say to not use more than 44 PSI as Goodyear does,then you should be able to run 40 PSI to allow for heat build up.If you feel the ride too harsh, you can lower the pressure until the ride you want is achieved.Under no circumstances run pressure below 34 PSI. Tire pressure is the single most important aspect in achieving good MPG.Check it often as well. |
