That route would be cheaper for me in the long run, I suspect.

Thanks for the info!

There isn't any compatibility 'issue' it is just that there are 2 different DVD wirting formats (DVD-R does NOT exist, its DVD-RW or DVD+R). The DVD-RW plays in many players, but is SLOOOOOW to burn 1:1 time! The DVD+R is less compatible with older players, but can burn up to 3:1 speed.
There is not much point in waiting really, as both of these methods will be obsolete by the time the mobile equipment catches up.
Like someone mentioned the new-gen DVD drives will hold from 18-24GB of data (versus 4.7GB now) and we will have all sorts of new goodies to play with. It's a never-ending cycle -- there is ALWAYS something better on the horizion, if you are always 'waiting' for the new stuff, you will never actually get there!
Anyhow, right now, with the influx of competitive models, pricing is artificially low -- competition is good for the consumer! Grab a deal while you can! When new-tech arrives, so do higher prices....

Yep, I would stay away from Sony car audio products. I have only owned a few and had bad encounters with them, but I have heard tons of complaints from others.

Also stay away from their home DVD players.

Actually, all of their audio stuff, car and home, even the ES stuff, I don't like. They don't have a good sound coming from their source units usually, but thats just my ear.

Just going by the labeling of the drives and discs (labeled DVD-R). DVD-R does exist as the drive in the iMac is CD-RW/DVD-R, not CD-RW/DVD-RW. I saw DVD+R discs and wondered about them since it said it could hold up to 8 hours of video but I suspect quality would suffer there. But the drive I'm going to have comes in the 17" screen new iMac (Superdrive).

If I can come up with the money, I'll get a good setup but if not, I'll wait until I know all my stuff can be played in the car. Because I'm constantly in the car, having MP3s on DVD would be nice due to the sheer amount that can go on it (4.7 GB of MP3s is a LOT). I could dump my favorite CDs, all their contents, to a DVD and have room for dozens more.

I wish someone would make a custom enclosure to put in the rear cubby without a sub. I already have a Fosgate Punch 10" sub and a Punch 75.2 amp in my truck. I plan on putting factory stereo back in my truck because I will be selling it when i get my turbo.
This is what I built last year:

JL Audio has a great box, very high quality. Unfortunately it comes with their 10w0 sub instead of the 10w3 or w6. I'm not sure if the depth of the w3 is too much for their Stealthbox for the PT.

Didn't know that JL had a subwoofer for the PT that's nice info i had one in my VW Golf for some time a big one don't know the number anymore but it had a perfect sound. I didn't want to lose any space in my PT and the mopar is probely far to expensive for his sound quality. This is a good solution i think. Maybe i,m wrong but if i understand it correctly from their side you can install it without needing the mopar side piece??

Another option is maybe the polk speakers where the talk about on PTDIY

I've heard of Sony problems too. One of the guys where I've had my stereos done advised me to stay away from Sony. He said they have potential, but there's just too many bugs. (Flashy equipment, but no *ahem* balls.)

As for my stereo, I just wanted good all around sound. I play CDs ranging from Beethoven to Dixie Chicks to Ozzy Osbourne and back. I would have loved to put in a Zapco amp, but they were more than I could afford.

Alpine CD with motorized face and changer controls
Alpine Flex 5 amp (picked it up when the one in my old car blew up and it suits almost anything I want to do.)
Pioneer Mid-range/Tweeter combo (not bad, but probably coulda done better)
JL Audio pre-fab box with 10" subs (good deal at the time for $300 CDN but now I want that stealthbox!!) :X

I have pics, but there on Mom's 'puter and I haven't had a chance to upload them yet.

Hey Brad...since you seem to be the guy to talk to...what's that JL stealthbox worth, any idea??

About how much should one expect to pay for the 7" motorized screen/DVD/MP3/CD unit made by Clarion?
