I paid $1.40 yesterday. I understand that the prices went up in the Mid West due to a refinery fire in Chicago. They anticipate bringing in gas from other areas to make up for the shortage, so the pain is going to get spread around the country. Maybe that's true, maybe just an excuse to gouge us.

Unleaded regular is 1.50 in the washington dc metro area. If you go outside the metro area its as cheap as 1.39. If my memory serves me the oil companies always raise the price around the holidays. I know we have it high here but I really sympathize with you guys in the midwest 1.88! Thats higher than it was here at its peak last spring. Hope things settle down again after labor day.

The extra gas tax in Illilois doesn't help. 1.67 Wed, afternoon and 1.92 Wed night.

stop blaming the oil companies and start laying the blame where it belongs....in washington DC. the stupid RFG regs, plus a nonexistant clinton energy policy that allowed OPEC to control the prices is what put us in this mess in the first place

In many cases it is not the oil companies but the gas station owner...MOST stations these days are owned privately...now...the oil company sold him his load 1 week ago at a certain rate....prices have gone up all week..its the station owner raising his price and pocketing the :/
Good point. The gas stations, especially the chain outfits, are usually who keep notchng up the gas prices. Gas prices always seem to go up just before a holiday...one of those thundering coincidences. But...we've got it good in the US. I lived for many years in Europe and Asia and those folks pay several times what we pay for gas. Imagine those poor PT Cruiser owners in the UK having to pay so much for their petrol--and the UK has their own North Sea oil reserves! It's mostly a matter of taxation.

I paid $1.60 on Friday morning. It could have been $2.00 and I would have been happy. I got over 22 mpg out of that tank, the best I ever have. I also remember paying $2.30 in Cleveland OH last summer (2000) to fill up the rental van.

Everything is relative. I try to always think about how much worse things could be. Does anyone remember the gas rationing in the early '70s?
