After the Bay Area's Loma Prieta quake in 1989 I was a nervous wreck for all the aftershocks. I feel your pain. (I still can't cross a bridge without a HUGE panic attack-- I guess seeing the Bay Bridge lower deck collapse hit me harder than I realized).
When we had that 7.3 I lost 1/2 the water out of my 75 gallon aquarium into the neighbor downstairs livingroom (through the floor).Oops! Maybe THAT'S why you aren't supposed to have aquariums in apartments? Good thing the waterbed didn't wind up downstairs too! I thought we'd all end up down there eventually.
Hope things quiet down for good , soon.

Well, we talked so much about earthquakes...that at 3:00pm today in the Eureka and Arcata, California area we had another one. about 30 min. later we had another little shaker....they were not rolling quakes, just short quick shakes. PTpreacher.....

Glad you and your family and friends are ok. New Madrid fault is a major one and due for a big one sooner or later. Do a search and there were several smaller earthquakes over a period of time before the big one hit. Northeast U.S. has several major fault lines too.

A 'fiver' isn't too bad...it's when it hits 6.0+ where you get a lot of property damage. Not many areas outside of the West Coast were built with earthquakes in mind. So IF a big one hits, a lot of people will be affected in your part of the country.

Here's a funny - I was in Penney's tonight, and there were two clerks talking to an older woman about the earthquake, and where they were when it happened. The older woman said, "I live in a condo, and my bed is next to a wall. On the other side is a woman who lost her husband two years ago. When I woke up and felt the earthquake, I thought, "I'm so happy that she found someone to be with!"

Here in Seattle, we have a double decker freeway, "the Viaduct," that was built a year after the one that collapsed in SF. It was built by the same guy who built the SF one. This one was damaged and they say "when" we get our next 5.0 or bigger, it will come down. Traffic is still allowed to travel on it and they do inspections every 3 months. I've taken it several times and whenever I do, I dont hesitate to speed to get from one end to the next. That section of freeway is 1.25 miles long, a very long 1.25 miles I might add at that. Just a few days ago they announced on the news that two fault lines they discovered about 5 years ago, is actually a fault zone and contains about 20 faults and runs through Seattle and to the other side of the Cascades. Not a pleasant thought knowing we are in range for a Mag 9 or greater!
