Military officials say ordinary Afghans are providing better intelligence on Taliban and Al-Qaida activities, pointing to frequent tips on the location of arms caches as proof.

Asked if better intelligence was behind commanders' optimism that bin Laden and other top fugitives will be caught, Hilferty said only that there was an "overall sense of confidence that things are getting better."

"The Taliban no longer exist as a real movement. I think Al-Qaida in Afghanistan no longer exists as a threat, as a military threat. So it's mainly just a sense of optimism in the country as a whole."


Stopping him cold is more important than capturing him. Capture will come or he'll be assasinated by his own disgruntled followers. Thanks for the link, Def.

I agree that if we continue to be patient and diligent in our search, the little bugger will be found and brought to justice.

Robert, I hope you are right. That we find him.

And the "little bugger" is actually 6'5" as I recall, which means he should stand out like a sore thumb over there.

Personally, I would rather see him killed (there is a standing "shoot to kill" order to the military) than go through a lengthy trial, then appeals etc. Lets just get rid of the vermin.

We (USA) have all the resources of the most powerful nation on the planet, and yet he still runs free. Maybe we have underestimated the enemy, maybe we overestimated our capabilities, or maybe we should spend the billions of dollars exploring Mars on home security.
