Default QUESTION ABOUT "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT

Here's a question for you Chrysler mechanics. My 1997 Plymouth Voyager had to go into the shop this week because the "Service Engine Soon" warning light came on. Upon checking my manual, I discovered that one of the reasons this could happen was because the gas cap was not secure. I checked and sure enough, it was not tight - in fact it was not even partly screwed in (not sure why that happened - could be someone was playing games because it was a few days prior when I last got gas). Anyway I tightened the gas cap and restarted the car, but the light was still on. So...I'm thinking that's not the problem, call the dealership and make an appointment to get it checked out. They put it on the diagostic machine and the code came up for gas cap.

So here's my question....why does the light not go out when you tighten the gas cap. I hate to be cynical, but it looks like a big cash grab for Chrysler...the light will only go out when they recode the thing - $37.50 later!

Waddaya think?

It will go out after several drive cycles. You just didn't give it enough time to reset.
However, the code will remain in memory for much longer.

The code is for a loss of pressure in the fuel system, not specifically the gas cap. It's an important emissions related code.
The new cars have a sealed fuel system. The days of venting gas fumes to the atmosphere are long gone.

My third try to reply - now you have a better answer than I had anyway - I was largely on the same track, but other post is more concise.

I had similar bout with 'check engine' light on a neon - due to imtermitant short to oxygen sensor.

The same thing happened to my Olds Silhouette van some time back, and it took two fill-ups before it went away. Be patient and utilize the old "strip of electrical tape" to cover the light if it bugs you.

Thanks for the input! I guess I've never been long on patience! Just didn't wait long enough.....I like the electrical tape idea though. I'll use that if there's a next time!

Just remember to put the gas cap on tight enough and you will have no problems. If kids are playing with it get a locking gas cap. kevin
