Krispy Kreme makes London debut

LONDON - In the beginning, there were tea tins, chocolate truffles, smoked fish and roasting quails. But Oct. 3 the impeccably polite salespeople in the Food Hall at posh Harrods department store, which commands international respect for quality, will start pushing a new delicacy: the all-American Krispy Kreme doughnut.

A red neon sign promising "Hot Doughnuts Now" will help lure well-heeled customers who parade daily across the store's white marble floors in search of items representing the epitome of good taste.

"We chose Harrods for our first store because this is a gourmet product," said Don Henshall, managing director of Krispy Kreme UK. "Harrods only displays high-quality products, and everyone realizes that."
