I got this email and opened it, but NOT the attachment..... will I still get infected or did I need to download the "patch" they were offering? I have Norton's Anti Virus, but it won't install on my computer!!!

As long as you do not click on any atachment. You should be OK.
If the Norton does not install go with McAfee.
It isn't safe to be on the Internet without a virus scan running ALL THE TIME !

The "Patch" in the e-mail IS THE VIRUS. Practice safe e-mail procedures. If you are not expecting an attachment, just delete the e-mail. I set up my e-mail program to move any incoming e-mails with attachments to the trash bin. That way, you won't accidentally open it and can just empty the trash bin and any suspicious e-mail without even opening it. Also, some e-mails have "call home" ability and can tell the sender if the e-mail was received and read, thus giving them a valid address they can sell to bulk (spam) e-mailers.

Also, some ISPs have a "Web mail" service for their subscribers. This allows you to look at your messages on their email server. With the "Web mail" interface they provide, you can delete any email you don't want before you download it to your server. Thus, you can eliminate any virus-carring email instantly, and those sending tracking SPAM email learn that their email was not downloaded by you...which may prompt them to remove you from their mailing lists eventually.
