Unhappy Possible Disaster!! **PLEASE READ!**

I wanted folks to be aware of what happened to me on the way home from work tonight. I DO NOT KNOW if this affects automatics or not... or all PTs.... but please CHECK IT!!

I suppose there's a TSB or Recall which I've ignored somewhere... haven't looked yet.. but I can't be the only one!

A couple days ago... I noticed a slight gasoline smell 'around' the cruiser. I didn't think too much of it.. cuz I had just filled it.. and it was topped off a tad too much. It seemed to get worse tho... Tonight on the way home.. the gas fumes filled the cabin so badly... that I nearly passed out... seemed to be coming from the A/C vents....

I pulled into my local station near my house...just as the car got unbearably hot.... The mechanic opened the hood and actually SCREAMED at me to shut the car down when he opened the hood! I didn't have that much more to go before it blew ;(

Chrysler had routed the gas line in such a manner that it had been resting/rubbing on the hot metal A/C lines all this time... and I about damn near died of serious gas fumes. GAS EVERYWHERE!! Wore a hole in the gas line and it was spouting all over the place! I do not 'do' engines.. and no one has touched that since I bought it.

It's being towed to the dealership as we speak.... and while it's no longer under any warranty... they had *BETTER* fix this 'on the house'.... or else!!! PLEASE check the gas line and make sure it's not resting on anything....

Silly Eagle,
The warning was posted on another forum a couple of months ago. As soon as I read it I went out to the garage to check mine. I had covered all my lines with red wire wrap but when I lifed the gas line, I could see where it was rubbing against the metal line, like you said. As luck would have it, it was only wearing on the plastic red wire rap. The suggestion was made to use a tie-wrap on the gas line to keep it away from the metal lines out of harms way. EVERYBODY, if your reading this, drop everything and go check the gas line on the left side of the engine that runs beside the dual silver air-conditioning lines. Check to see if the rubber gas line is wearing away as it touches the silver metal line right where the black cap is that technicians use to test the air-conditioning. DO IT NOW!

ZOUNDS! I just checked the KanCruiser and sure enough, gas line was right up against the A/C line, just like you said.
No signs of wear yet, but I can sure see how it could happen.
Thanks for the heads-up, SillyEagle! You may have saved all of us a Cruiser.
A simple zip-tie, securing the gas line up against nearby vacuum line, and the problem is solved.

WOW... never noticed this... not only could this cause a fire under the hood... but could be a life or death issue...

Thanks for pointing this out...

I think this safety issue should be outlined in photos....

Anyone have pictures to diagram the gas line and air conditioning lines?

I'm sure this would be a big help for everyone...

I guess I have a reliable mechanic. He caught this during my oil change a few months back and tied it up with a zip tie. At the time, I didn't realize how important it was....but I'll be sure and thank him again.

Exclamation

I swiped this pic from one of Chino's older posts [thanks Chino!!] because it shows what I'm talking about more clearly than any I've seen so far:

The left points out the parts. The yellow dotted line on the right shows how my gas line was sort of just 'hooked' over the air/con valve to keep it 'secure' I guess

Just got done checking Vinny (my Dream Cruiser) and everything is OK. There is a zip tie in place already keeping the fuel line out of harm's way. whew!

Thanks Silly Eagle for posting this. Although I'm sorry to hear about your close call. Sure am glad to know that you're OK and hope everything gets fixed up.
