Default Magnet test revisited... again.....

On Sunday or monday I will be changing the oil in the PT. If anybody remembers last time i strapped a bunch of magnets to the filter to see if they do anything or not. I have found a way to open the filter with out having to use a hack saw and generate more shavings than is really there. Basicly a modified can opener..... Any way Monday or tuesday i will report in and let you all know.

Even if there is only a tiny bit of shavings. it may be worth the $10 to get a real filter magnet that is about 15x stronger than what i put on.

I was a mechanic for 20 years on heavy equipment. We took routine oil samples and cut filters open to look for contamination. We had a tool for cutting the filters open. You can find this tool at any good tool supplier like Mac or Snap-on.

BTW, if you have visible metal in your engine filter, you have a BIG problem. I would not be too alarmed to see metal in an automatic transmission pan but I WOULD be alarmed to see it in an engine. Just my 2 cents.

Mark, I have a magnetic drain plug, and there WERE shavings (not a lot, but still enuff to see) at last oil change. This is normal. I'd be amazed if you don't find some inside the filter. Keep us posted!

Here is a link to the pics I tookMagnetic Drain Plug

I know you will get shavings when new. But now 20,000 miles later I am wondering how much there is. We have gone arround in circles on this topic before and I think this little bit of prevention cant hurt, it can only help. I was just wondering how much it will help. And I thought i would share what i found.

I still get shavings on drain plug,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,'93 Cherokee with almost 80,000 miles.
Might not be as many on PT though, due to aluminum head.

I found a bunch of shavings in the sink this morning, does that mean I need a new razor?
