Default Oil filter question.

I've been using Purolator 10241oil filters on my 2001 PT (it's a short oil filter). I'm going to switch to Purolator filters for my wife's van. Her van takes a Purolator 20195 (it's a long oil filter). I just noticed that both filters appear to have the same mounting threads and gasket size. In a recent post, there were a number of long oil filters listed as suitable for the PT. When I checked the Purolator cross-reference for these longer oil filters, the 20195 was one of the ones that was listed. I tried to find more specs on the 20195 but didn't have luck.

Can the Purolator 20195 be substituted on the 2001 PT?

It sure would be convenient to use the same oil filter on both vehicles and I like the idea of using an oil filter with a bigger element on the PT.

I'm sure MX-5 would have some say in this, but here is my take (from a personal experience). At one time, my dad noticed that A Chevy Beretta & Ford Taurus (I may be mixing cars here, but I think it illustrates the point) both took a filter that "looked" exactly the same (same thread, same size), but were a different Wix part number. He asked a mechanic, and at the same time I looked up something on the net. We found out, that just because a filter looks the same, does not mean it is the same. I don't know the techincal info behind it, but backpressure can be different, how the filter distibutes the oil (again, I don't remember the term here) can be different.

Bottom line, check to see if the filter is applicable to the PT (from a book, or something)

The internal differences are the anti-drainback valve and the pressure bypass valve.

Filters that look the same can react very differently. They are made to match the engine and oil pump of each car.

Many times and aftermarket company will make a filter that averages the specs so that it will fit several vehicles and stay within the min / max specs.

PTDIY has a long list of filters, including the longer versions listed in the FAQs.

The longer versions maintain the internal specs.

The 10241 and 20195 are identical (other than size), same BPV setting (9-11 psi) and both have an anti-drainback valve.

Thanks guys for summing up the major differences inside oil filters.

Thanks PTFever, that's the info I was looking for.

Just don't buy Fram! I used to use them, now find they have turned to garbage. I get K&N filters for about $8 @ when I buy 12.

One of the things I have always loved about this site: when somebody comes up with good technical info, it's shared with everybody else.
Next oil change, the KanCruiser will be getting a supersized filter.

Pure one oil filter # PL20195 came up as the part # for the PT Turbo When looking a few weeks back. Don't see why you can't use it on the non turbo. It is used in other DC cars and trucks too.

Happy New Year

I assumed everyone has read the FAQ's at www.ptdiy.net

Here's what they have:

* Additional manufacturers of PT Cruiser oil filters:

Amsoil
SDF57

Fram
PH3614

Group-7
V241

Hasting
LF157

K&N
HP-1002

Lee
LF2835

* Meijer
M22

Motorcraft
FL793

Pronto
PO3614

Purolator
L10241

* Purolator Pure One
PL10241

Wix
51348

* * Hastings
LF134

* * Casite
CS113

* * Fram
3600

* * Pronto
PO3600

* * AC Delco
PF34

* * Motorcraft

* Note: The Purolator Pure One is a good filter @ $5. The Meijer store brand is the same filter @ $2. The color of the rubber seal is black on the Meijer and red on the Puroloator Pure One.

* * Note: These are about double the capacity of the standard filters, with the same anti-drainback valve and pressure relieve rating. They are the same as OEM in every way, accept they are twice as long.
