Question still 'Simple Mod' query

How about some input on LEAVING the head unit, I assume thats my stock MoPaR CD receiver, and doing thus-
Step 1 Upgrading the 4 large speakers, giving more quality I hope to front and rear overall.
Step 2 Add powered subwoofer, probably only one, like an 8"
Tube or 10" in the left rear trunk panel.
Step 3 Replace head unit if above changes dont do 'it'

Posting this realizing a lot of the group are doing the Meet Me in St Louis thing this weekend!

From a previous post (I think it was mine!), someone mentioned trying to change the rear speakers was a waste of time because you don't have the "depth" to provide quality sound.

Another thing they pointed out was that most of the sound should come from up front (e.g., movie theaters), not rears...unless you've got one of those big subs taking up trunk space.

Don't take my word for it, let the real gurus add their two cents...good luck! I'll keep an eye out to see what others experience....

If U read between the lines I M looking for the easiest upgrade. With home stereo or your entertainment center its ALWAYS the speakers they talk about buying first quality.
I also dont wanna have oddball wires throughout, hence the thought of head unit last. Power to a powered subb is nothing, EZ to do.

I replaced my rear speakers with a set of Memphis speakers. Actually think the stock speakers sounded better than these do.

Larry,

You are welcome to check mine out when we meet.

I have the OEM head unit with Infinity 5X7's in the rear.
I also have the OEM powered subwoofer.
I have the 2001 RAZ code radio in my 2002, via an adapter wiring harness.

I'm very pleased with the sound.

BTW, you dont have to have oddball wires in a good install. Get whats called a reverse harness, about $20 at any shop. Plugs right into the factory connection. installing a aftermarket radio in a PT is about a 30min job (and I'm slow) Just use a face kit.

It was true 30 years ago, and it is still true today:

$10 extra in speakers is worth more than $100 extra in amps, etc.

The electronics are so good that the sound quality of an amp is pretty good even in cheap equipment (oh, I can see the flames coming now - yes, an expensive amp will sound a little bit better, but you need to be a critical listener to hear it. Road noise will hide the difference.) The high-end amps and players and such have much better knobs and switches and whatnot, and generally "feel" better to use. That's where the expensive bits are.

You are quite right to start with speakers, then add head end when you get the cash and the urge.

That is true for the most part, but it's not your sense of sound that will notice the difference, it's your sense of touch. I had a MTX amp in my old car and that thing used to get insanely hot to the touch and then just stop playing on me until it cooled off. It was rediculous that I couldn't play my music loud for more than a half hour at a time for fear that my subs would spontaneously cut out on me. HOWEVER, I completely agree with you that you will notice the difference if you skimp on the speakers (ie. component speakers vs. 2-way)
