Well I hate to tell y'all what and how long I have had my speakers for my main home stereo, since buying them have gone thru (upgraded) I think thru 4 receivers counting original.
And the speakers just keep on crankin' . Think they R 8 or 10" woofers, 6 " midrange, and possibly 1 3/4" horn tweeters. Midrange and tweeters adj for crossover on the speaker enclosure. Currently have one of Sonys early STRAV units with remote. Its gotta be 13 yrs old.... Wheres my CANE????

My first set of Magnepan's was brought home in 1983!
I now have 3 sets.

www.magnepan.com

Don't give up on a good thing just because of some newfangled technology or slick advertising.

I still have 6 Crown mobile amplifiers that were built as prototypes in 1985 by Crown International, Elkhart Indiana. 600 watts, 6 channels, 21lbs!!!

You still do!!!, I used to install those. I saw one on ebay awhile back but lost the bid. I LOVED those amps!!!! they were big "ugly" monsters (I thought they were beautiful). I won my 1st competion with one using a:
audiocontrol EQX
rockford fosgate midbass & tweeters
phase linear coax
2 pyle 12" subs in a box I tuned using a piece of tape on the dust cap with the letters A&B written on it & a oscillator (sp) (really old school trick)

Bachbusters was the Hot bass CD at the time.
I really turned heads when I fired that system up. OH yea it was in a piece of S_ _ T Chevy Citiation! with a Blaupunkt radio mounted vertical in the dash.

I built many competition car stereos back in the days before rap music and break dancing.
I was in the NASCA - national autosound challenge assn.

The worst car was a 1980 Pinto.
I was 2 seats and all audio when I was done.
I even had to modify the door sealing gaskets to get it to seal up.
I used 2 Crown amps, dual batteries (there were no such things as boom capacitors), Kenwood head unit, Audiocontrol EQ, single 15" MTX elliminator, and about 20 Pyle speakers.

I live close enough to have lunch with Crown, Pyle, ElectroVoice, Rockford, and Magnepan.
I have a degree in electronics, and several of my instructors were engineers at Crown and EV.

I bought 15 of the CMA-1 Crown mobile amps in 1988!!!!

Looks like me first move will be the rear speaker. Replace wiwth 6 x 8 two or three way with non paper whizzer cone.
Then work forward from there.
The thought occurs that the door speakers will really be fillins, and that small front item outta be pretty good quality since its so directional to the front seat.

L.

Stay tooned......

I replaced the rear and the door speakers on my car. The rears seemed pointless to upgrade after-the-fact because the sound quality barely changed, and didn't really sound 'better'. Since most of the sound comes from the doors, I replaced those with hesitation. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the speakers I chose had more bass response and MUCH more treble response from the RAZ head unit.

The dash speakers are probably not worth changing. They do a decent job as-is. The RAZ head unit really can put out quality audio, but the Mopar speakers held it back.

I bought the OEM Subwoofer for the 2002 model year, which was tough to find. My dealership was able to get one after a lengthy search. (The 2001 and 2002 differ in that the wiring harness is updated to use the '02 radio without splicing.) The OEM sub is extremely potent for being an 8". I actually have to keep the bass level slider at the middle position...at the MOST. Some CD's will cause me to push the bass control all the way down.

The Mopar sub is expensive, but it's truly hidden away. You would need a T-35 (?) Torx bit to remove your rear seat belt, but that's the only major surgery.

Still fumbling around but on the brink of rear speakers must likely 2 way. I have looked 33 times in my thread here and SOMEONE SoMeWhErE posted that the (front) door and dash speakers are driven by one OEM radio output, and the B pillar (C pillar?) by the other. Hence the rears are the more or less bass? [but if so if one has the sub .... ?]
Have not extensively searched the DIY area but seems like there is a need for 'some kind' of definative outline of the audio characteristics of the various PT years???? Including precautions, warnings, hints, etc?
And no one has even suggested adding speakers to the rear doors or surface mtd tweeters at the rear speakers???
Reason being there are many threads on this yet no culling of data into one lump....

Cheers-

L

All 6 speakers are driven from the OEM radio.

Page 8W-47-4 of the service manual shows that the front outputs go to both the door speakers and the dash tweeters. They are in parallel and the tweeters use a simple capacitor to block the bass.
The rears and the door speakers get full range output.
The OEM sub (I have one) taps off the rear speaker signal and amplifies the bass. It does not effect the rear speaker signal.

The connector pinouts and wiring are shown in the power antenna guide on www.ptdiy.net in the guides section.

L: All well and good, sounds appropriate and basic.

The rears and the door speakers get full range output.

L: HoKay, this is of course due to the cap allowing tweeter to tweet only and not get based out

L: Thanks for the Clarifications. Sure think this should be in the DIY FAQ AUDIO section.....
Ahhh to run rear tweeters off the front/door signal would take a long lead back, but easily run under carpet and behind rear panels....

Again, many thanx for clarifications.

No don't do that ... run front tweets to rear. What MX-5 is saying is if the rears had tweeters, you would hear the highs also. Since the speaker is full range, the highs will roll off. This means that the high frequenties put out by the radio are not being played to their fullest extent beacuse of the speaker design. In reality, all you would need to do is pull the speaker & connect a tweeter in parallel to the rear w/ a xover & it WILL sound very similar to the front speakers.

DC does not do this or use a better pair of speakers to save $$$. Thats the ONLY reason.
Most "consumers" will never know the difference & think it sound good enough.

Adding the sub will make the car sound better as a whole. The rears will not loose any highs because the sub should have a built in amp & xover. If you just added the tweets to the rears & the sub. It will amaze you on the better sound with the factory system.

I did this years ago in my 86 Grand AM SE. People thought I spend $1,000 on that system, I had less that $75 into it.

Its a cheap way to improve sound quality while you save your $$$ for the better system. 1st change the head unit, it will make even the factory speakers sound that much better.

Good Luck & keep asking.
