Default Rear-View Camera Location....Suggestions Wanted!

I am installing a new Sat Nav system and head unit in BlueFUNder next week. Well, I'M not doing it, a qualified Auto Electrician is!

The DVD unit will accept AV inputs so I have bought a colour CMOS pinhole camera. It's tiny, and I was thinking of mounting it under the roof spoiler, but I've gone off that idea as the car get's parked in the city quite a lot and I don't want the camera to "go walkies!".

Sooooo...my next choice is to mount it in the 3rd Brake Light Diffuser housing. I can make a small pad to sit it on so that it is angled down to point at the bumper and road, so that it can be an effective reverse cam.

Anyone have any other suggestions for the location? Anyone here done this themselves? Any help and pics would be a great bonus!

Try different locations before you decide where to install it to see how the "view" looks. 3rd Brake area sounds fine, but would depend if you mount it under the light (might block some rear view) or inside of it (will particially block some light). In the bumper might be an alternative. Chrysler's Park Pilot is installed there (see pic below) Or can be hidden in the license plate area (just need a small hole so the camera can see out, camera would be neatly hidden behind the bumper):

Installation in the lower corner of the rear window may be an option too.

Yeah, considered the bumper but the model I have gone for isn't waterproof. OK, I could sort that I guess. The hole for the rear wiper is another option...BUT I still have the rear wiper attached......It's a MUST in this country!

I think the 3rd brake light area will be OK. Next week when I get my satnav system installed, I'll have chance to play with a few locations and let you know. Till then, thanks for the feedback chaps!

Wateproofing t sounds farly easy. I've gt an X10.cm camera that isn't so tiny. I'd like to put it in the bumper, but it may be a bit too big from what Ican feel around under there.

I don't think I mind losing the rear wiper, maybe I'll fish around back here. Hhhmmm...

While i've never mounted a Cam in a PT, we have done some pretty wild stuff for the company i work for.
I had a client who had one mounted on his jetski. Great footage to work with for his Jet ski extreme videos.

If you mounted it in the 3rd brake light area, would you not be blinded with red light everytime you hit the brake? If you wanted to see behind you while you were stopped, would the red light overpower what you see? On coming car headlights? Mounting high, to the side and angled down seems to be the best way or at least I would think.
