Sean, wash the parts thoroughly with soap and water,If you can, also wash it with a plastic cleaner (automotive type).
I don't know what you are trying to mask it with but the best thing would be a 3M fineline tape,it's blue and tends to keep it's shape around corners better than standard masking tape.
