Well, they used a lot. The VW engine was a 1.7, they also used a 1.6 that I believe was a Peugot motor in that car. They also used a Mitsu 2.5L V6 that was related to the Mitsu 3.0. And of course the 2.6 Mitsu motor used in the late 70s/early 80s that is generally unloved.
Mitsu figured out the valve guide issue in the early 90s. That was an unfortunate problem because it was so visible; the motor itself was very strong.
It can get confusing. There was a 2.5L 4cyl used in Jeeps that had zero to do with the 2.5 that was used in the cars.
Interesting trivia: The 1.8L used in the Mini is a derivitave of the Chrysler 2.0.
