Falls couple leads contest

A Niagara Falls couple may be on their way to victory.

With only one day left in the Natural Wonder Wedding Contest, Shayna Schwenkbeck, 26, and Scott Clute, 27 leads with 39 percent of the votes.

"It's kind of nerve-racking," Clute said. "I try not to think about it too much."

The contest, sponsored by Channel 7 WKBW, narrowed 800 couples down to five for the chance to win a $25,000 wedding.

Clute and Schwenkbeck are trying to remain optimistic but know that anything can happen to bump them out of the top spot.

"It's out of our hands, really," Clute said.

Voting originally began in late March, but technical difficulties caused the process to start over.

"We felt the voting was unfair," said John Di Sciullo, program director for Channel 7.

He noted that people were finding ways to vote more than once. After speaking to each couple, it was decided that the first set of votes would be erased and the new tabulation would begin March 24 and end April 7.

"We decided to restart the system and put stronger filters in place," Di Sciullo said.

Schwenkbeck said she and her fianc/ were shocked to hear the news.

"It was kind of a letdown at first," she said.

The glitch didn't prevent the couple from marching on, however. They continued to recruit voters by posting fliers and contacting friends and family in multiple states.

Voting officially ends at midnight on Wednesday. Results will be announced on "AM Buffalo" at 10 a.m. next Monday.

Included in the prize package is a wedding ceremony on Goat Island, a reception at the Top of the Falls Restaurant, a five-day New Orleans honeymoon, the cake, dress, flowers and wedding bands. The event will take place May 21.
