And QSD-I have revised my opinion (after thinking about it). It is not necessarily horrid because if they were listed as killed by the enemy, then I assume that did their families a favor. I do not think that the government would pay benefits to widow and children if a soldier committed suicide whereas they would be more likely to do so if he was killed by the enemy.

There was a payout of $10,000 for death in service. I have no idea whether it was revoked for suicide.
There was a guy in 'Nam who dropped acid with a buddy. He started to have to have a "bummer", so his buddy came to grab friends to cheer him up, when we got to him, he'd stuck a .45 in his mouth and blew the back of his head off. What would've been the point of letting his parents know that?

War produces stress and ugly memories. Some escape from them with drugs, or alcohol, or look for a permanent solution.

I've read police have a high suicide rate - probably for the same reason.
