Even if there is only a tiny bit of shavings. it may be worth the $10 to get a real filter magnet that is about 15x stronger than what i put on.

I was a mechanic for 20 years on heavy equipment. We took routine oil samples and cut filters open to look for contamination. We had a tool for cutting the filters open. You can find this tool at any good tool supplier like Mac or Snap-on.

BTW, if you have visible metal in your engine filter, you have a BIG problem. I would not be too alarmed to see metal in an automatic transmission pan but I WOULD be alarmed to see it in an engine. Just my 2 cents.
